I call from within
Where a deeper memory lives
Where once you swam like a mermaid
In a deep blue sea

Where seashells played in your hair
And underwater melodies sang to your heart
Where you read the currents of the ocean
As a natural intelligence

For now I see how you often forget
No longer trusting in the waves of your intuition
How schools of fishes sometimes pass you by
And you do not see

So I call from afar, an ocean lament
I seep into you as only water can
I gush through your hair and trickle over your skin
I awaken the mermaid tail of mystery you walked away from

And so I set you free into the depths
That you might join with your lost half
That you might swim with dolphins and sing with whales
That you might be one with the tides that wax and wane
Imparting wisdom’s kiss through the rhythms of the ocean

And so when you return to land may you remember
May you still know the powerful kiss of the sea
The smell of salt, the sound of the waves, your friends the fishes

And then may you flow … simply flow
Water singing through your hair and drenching your skin
Awakening lost senses into realization
Your mermaid tail merging into your steps on the land

Thank you for your comment Rex – so interesting you called it a prayer as I didnt think of it like that when I wrote it but that is what it actually felt like >:

This is a fantiastic poem, full of fantasy. I bet everyone who loves the sea identifies with this one. I’m sure you are half a mermaid who once long ago left the sea and yearn to go back.

  • Plum replied

You know I feel a bit like I was a mermaid – often wish I had a tail. Thank you so much for your lovely comment >:
