Everyday Life

Thursday night here in the new world,
and outside this train window
the blinking lights of a city rolling past
is the sky we’re staring into.
if I could rewire an entire power grid
just now, before the cops came,
I could make constellations
for you to navigate the seas
of this midnight shawl I sit tucked in,
the keel of your hand harbored on my knee.
I’d string out gas-yellowed bridge lamps
to form the big dipper, then pick a lighthouse
as the north star, that is unmoving—
just like my nose in your armpit.
And if the cops don’t come and the train still runs
we’ll go sit on our stoop by candlelight
the darkness lush as dark mocha fudge
Laughing with our mouths full,
our teeth like stars, twinkling at
passing cars.
