Punurrunha
by Mieke Boynton

As soon as I saw this photo I thought of the poem “My Country” by Dorothea Mackellar. I’ve loved this poem ever since I learnt it way back in primary school.
Here are a couple of my favourite verses

I love a sunburnt country,
A land of sweeping plains,
Of ragged mountain ranges,
Of droughts and flooding rains.
I love her far horizons,
I love her jewel-sea,
Her beauty and her terror -
The wide brown land for me!

An opal-hearted country,
A wilful, lavish land –
All you who have not loved her,
You will not understand -
Though earth holds many splendours,
Wherever I may die,
I know to what brown country
My homing thoughts will fly.

So amazing. Such an outstanding piece of art, Dianne. And so true to the colours of the Pilbara after a good soaking Wet Season.

  • Thankyou so much Mieke! It was a pretty amazing photo I had to start with :)

Dianne, this turned out so fine. I have loved watching the intensity to your approach to painting “My Country”. It paid off. My favorite section is those green velvety slopes, midground, against the distant mountain.

  • Thanks Frannie :) I just framed it and hung it on my wall today. Really happy with how it looks. My hubby dosen’t actually know that I have painted it yet so I’m wondering if he will notice it lol!
