Nanna by Dianne Ilka

Small (16.4" x 22.6")

Available to buy on…

A4 size soft pastels on dark brown colourfix paper

A portrait of my husband’s late Grandmother.
It was difficult to get a good reference photo to use for my portrait of Nanna. I had to zoom in quite a bit on the original photo to get a close up of her face. I’m quite happy with the resemblence so it will be interesting to see what people who also knew her will think.

Below is a close up of the reference photo that I used. It was not a very good copy so provided a bit of a challenge at times. I’m actually struggling a bit at the moment with having the reference photo up because I am seeing too many things that I need to change. The computer screen is showing more detail than my printout did.

Thankyou so much for stopping by and taking the time to look at my artwork!
A lot of my original artwork displayed on here is also available for sale. Please feel free to send me a message for more details.

    Lovely portrait, Dianne.
    Post the photo too.
I did one recently also of someone’s Nan, but it was a digital painting. The person who commissioned her was happy with it, so I’m happy too :-)

  • Thankyou so much! It sounds a silly question, but how do I post a reference photo in the description without adding it to my portfolio?

A lovely portrait Dianne. To answer your question below, just upload the image, then check hide from public view. You can still copy it for a reference image.

  • Thankyou! Having trouble getting rb to work on my computer at the moment but I will add my reference photo later :)

Wonderful portrait! It has been a very long time since I did a realistic human and was never great at it…I envy your skill!

  • Thanks Cindy! I just added my reference photo but the little differences between the two is starting to annoy. Note to self – Do not fiddle with the finished piece anymore or you will completely wreck it!!!!

    Aah, you got advice!! :)
Your final piece is great. I think everybody who does realism, me included, is never entirely happy.
About your ‘note to self’: I have a personal rule that when I’m done with a painting, I sign it. And once it’s signed, I NEVER go back to tweak!! EVER! That really keeps me from fiddling too much and possibly ‘wrecking’ it.
Otherwise your painting or drawing will never be finished. There has to be an end and my signature on it seals the project. And I find sticking to my ‘rule’ helps a lot. Try it! :)

  • The only way to stop me fiddling with something is to put it behind glass lol! I’ve done a tiny “fiddle” to the chin but not worth uploading a new photo :) I have been known to completely wreck faces before by “adjusting” them.
