Artist's Description

This hotel is situated in a prominent position across the road from the village square at Corfe Castle, Dorset. Named after the Royalist Bankes family who owned Corfe Castle at the time of the Civil War when it was twice besieged by Cromwell’s Parliamentary forces, first in 1643 and then in 1646 when it was captured and left as a ruin. Although regaining their property when the monarchy was reinstated the family decided not to rebuild the castle, but their name remains associated with the area.
