Dogs in Space
Tribute to a brilliant 80s Aussie film made in Richmond, Victoria called Dogs in Space and to Laika… the little space dog who sacrificed his life for the Russians and their fight to win the space race.

The first living creature allegedly to be sent into space aboard the Russian spacecraft Sputnik 2 was a dog named Laika. Laika was a stray found wandering the streets of Moscow. The flight was launched November 3, 1957.
Laika is a Russian word for “dog”.
It is said that before the launch, one of the scientists took Laika home to play with his children. In a book chronicling the story of Soviet space medicine, Dr. Vladimir Yazdovsky wrote, “I wanted to do something nice for her: She had so little time left to live.
Laika died during the flight. Her remains burnt up in the atmosphere on April 14, 1958.
Although advertised as another example of the superiority of the Soviet system, Laika’s mission also brought a few unintended results. In the West, Sputnik 2 renewed the debate over the treatment of animals, while in the U.S.S.R., the flight was widely ridiculed by ordinary citizens as propaganda.

I cannot praise Dogs in Space high enough and i’m currently trying to write a review of DVD release for my Blog.
I can associate soooo much of my young adulthood with that movie,
The extras are excellent – even if its just to see all the 70s “little bands” shitbag Nick Cave.
On another unrelated note, Sputnik was followed by Telestar which is one of my favourite instrumentals which I recently found out was recorded by the The Tornados whose rhythm guitarist was a chap named George Bellamy who had a child called Mathew Bellamy who grew up to be the genius behind Muse.
Who said the universe isn’t linked.
I could go on but my fingers hurt.
Wonderful

It definitely does deserve very high praise! I really love that it’s a movie set in the 70s… made in the 80s too. And the music… well the music is just what sets it really apart! (and I love the whole egg flip obsession… I could drink egg flip everyday… Wish the Flip would come back!!! I make do with egg nog at Xmas time – but it’s just not the same!) I was talking about the DVD release with the very talented Bellmusker not long ago (she, like you feels it was a huge part of her youth… she even used to live just nearby to the house in Berry Street)
It’s just such a unique film!! In my opinion there’s nothing else like it. And the fact that it was set in Richmond Victoria just makes me feel like a proud Vic patriot! :) LOL
If you remember, send me a link to the review when you’ve finished… would love to read it.

Top work Pip …. good to see you gettin ya vector on!!! ... with a touch a P.D imagery, even better! Love it. I remember the movie got ‘weird’, ‘strange’, ‘out there’ reviews, but after watching the trailer i don’t think i saw it. Might have to dig it out at the video shop.
As for Laika …...... bastards i say.
Pip Gerard replied
yeah getting my vector on… but notice how simple the vector is :) Still… getting there…. gotta start somewhere. Worth a watch Dogs in Space is…especially cause it’s an Aussie Film.

Vector, a bit of PD imagery, and is that some halftone I see?
You`re really pushing yourself mate, well done!
Pip Gerard replied
well when I’m seeing such unbelievably insane vector work that you and Nick keep on producing I can’t help but want to push myself (which is pretty much the highest compliment I can give you guys in my opinion… cause you drive me to want to be better) This is all just practice stuff really… I’m chuffed you noticed my tiny little halftone foray :) I’m holding off the Rocky till I feel my skills are at a bit better level to do it justice.
