Artist's Description

This photograph was taken at Reykjavik Old Harbour. Two of the infamous Hvalur whaling boats were being repaired in the background while a bright red painted bicycle advertising bike tours around the city was propped against a pillar. Despite being able to walk right up to the ships and see the steel wire ropes pinning them to the pier, it was quite clear that I wasn’t all that welcome with my camera. While it’s possible to read so much about whaling and see all the stock images of the creatures being harpooned, it’s quite eerie to get so close to something that is – quite literally – in the centre of the action. Incidentally, Elding Whaling Tours – the most popular whale watching company in Reykjavik – moor their ships directly opposite the whaling vessels. Very sad.
