Lilly is standing on the edge of the world
where a vineyard meets the canyon’s high lip.
She sees the blue sky. The golden sun ascends,
happy to shine upon her yellow hair.
She greets his bright face with a smile,
with a child’s confidence.
Lilly sees apple orchards
in the wistful mist
of morning far below.
She opens her arms.
She wants it all. She loves it all.
Pio is playing his flute.
Doves are singing plaintively
under the eves.
His flute’s silver breath
makes clear the melody
his heart was dreaming.
His mind is drifting with images
of an old lady in the village
who is laboring to die.
He sees her angel in a vision
and greets her with a smile.
His flute plays a wordless prayer of love.
Her angel writes down its passionate meaning.
Lilly runs into Pio’s writing hut.
She squats in a sunlit corner. Her dress slides
up into the saddle of her hips.
Pio looks at Lilly. He smiles.
His flute silkily celebrates her long legs
in a lilting melody of prayer.
His angel writes down its passionate meaning
and carries it in a little pocket
to He who dances
with the eternally young.
In the sky,
an old woman’s soul is rising higher
like the sun,
bright as a prayer in an angel’s pocket.
Everything is innocent again,
bright as a prayer…
everything is free.
From a large collection of Pio and Lilly poems celebrating the union of spiritual Love and freedom… connecting with Creation in the spirit of Love and freedom, and such qualities as innocence, compassion, tender humility, celebrative joy… a passionate love of the miracle of beauty we call Life.
