Mary, Timios Stavrios Chapel, Crete by Blake Steele

Mary, Timios Stavrios Chapel, Crete by

*Another image from this tiny little chapel that sits on the edge of a high cliff over looking the sea. I was alone there and slept in the chapel in a cloud of incense surrounded by these glorious images, with cracked, dirty glass covering them. These are original paintings, not prints. The golden lights are reflections of the candles in the dirty glass.

I’m so glad the Greek people have left the paintings right were they are, even though bird shit was on a beautiful painted crucifix of Jesus. It all seemed, just right.

I love Mary’s pure and gentle face. A beautiful image of sweet Love and compassion. Oh, the sunset that night was absolutely beautiful with a fierce, fiery glow.*

She is gorgeous. I agree that keeping the old Old (within reason – they do have glass over them) is best. Too much “restoration” usually just makes for ugly. Love the expression! Perhaps the little smile is from your camera angle. You give her life. Thank you…off to do some thinking/creating!

  • How delicious… thinking creatively. I look forward to what comes through.

I agree that Her beautiful face radiates in this and has a softness and presence too rarely seen in religious work…great shot

  • As I’ve shared with others, we need new images of whole people, new icons… by whole I mean opened to the essence of all of us, the infinite Light and peace, and bringing it through all soul and body levels and energies… a new humanity. I think the faces will express a lot of laughter and celebrative joy then. Thanks for your visit!
