I stayed on the island of Sifnos for several weeks in the fall of 2005. On one of my wanderings I discovered a beautiful little monastery in the hills a bit outside of Apollonia. I think the name of it is Monastery of Panagia Vrissis. It was open, but empty. I returned with my sleeping gear and spent the night there alone, photographing the beautiful images in the chapel by candlelight. This is an image of the candles and smoke from burning incense and hopefully gives a bit of a sense of the beauty and peace of the place at night.
I hope the Greeks do something to preserve these amazing places, other than locking them up. They are little doorways to the Great Otherness of that which is forever pure.
