Graphic Scratch, Imperfectly, Melbourne & Victoria, The Word Tree and WMGShe was barefoot in the sea
under silver fins and stars
when the hot blustery wind
crept up on her
amongst tangled vines
of pumpkin coaches
torn swatches
of scarlet dresses
snagged on frosty bare branches
in the middle of winter’s chill.
She felt things crack
slippers of glass
splinter
defrost
melt
under the heat
under the breath
of the howling wolf
that
blew her house down
left a whisper
a clawed yearning
at the ledge of her shoulders
her name
your voice
inside the seashell of her heart.
She felt bonfires
she thought had raged and died
reignite
burn
in her spine
the honey of memory
drizzling down her throat
dust motes falling
on the amber afternoon
of extravagant delight sun
catching in her red riding hood
grazing and trickling over her skin
behind her knees
under her heels
running
wild Black Beauty in her veins
the Highwayman came riding
red love-knots tied her hair
your lips
your tongue
your fingers
bound
around her wrists
suddenly
in colour
in life
a projection on the white castle walls
of her insides
technicolour.
Her fingers itch
at the lure
at the temptation
of the mirage
on the hot dry wind
that has blown over deserts
to the sea
on the pages of
ever afters
sleeping beautiful
make-believe
make believe
the embers lodge
at the nape of her neck
yearning claws up her throat
from moats and dark bridges
under which beasts hide.
She looks over her shoulder
she looks for you there
on the dappled path
in the enchanted wood
but there are only trails
scattered
a Pied Piper’s tune
in folds
paper cranes
of origami stories
floating worlds
written in invisible ink
and whispers
whispers
on the searing wind
on the burning wind
in the shell of her heart
of things
left behind
untied
and undone.

Everyone is indebted to a fairy tale or two. This is a lovely piece that inspires one to read between the lines – something that should be done for most fairy tales. x

You are bloody fantastic, Holly. You take me on lovely, slightly dangerous (as is all real art, in all it’s forms, innit?) journeys, like i’m swimming with a Siren. Le sigh. xoxo

How do you do it, baby? With this one phrase, whole oceans of imagery opened up to me, and when I came to red love-knots tied her hair the words took on the look of your gorgeous photography…..tales of life and colour particular to your own beautifully deft touch.
And Tommy, sometimes the things left undone, untied or unsaid take us right where we’re meant to be…...x x x

And here I thought that interpretation of fairy tales was my milieu – lol – when all along it was just one more venue through which to share your astonishing, amazing and simply glorious talent. No one – no one on earth – does visual, sensual, achingly beautiful and emotive images like you do Holly – and as ever they move me to a place in my soul, my spirit that I can never describe. Your words are the nectar I add to my morning coffee, take on my journey through the day and into my dreams at night. Thank you.
