Libby

Libby belongs to the following groups:

Graphic Scratch, Melbourne & Victoria and WMG

On the day Libby was born, six blackbirds circled over her mother’s house in an inky formation of midnight feathers. She blinked twice at them through the window and they scattered through the pale sky.

She wears the days of March in her eyes; summer melting to autumn in threads of fawn and gold.

She collects fabric off-cuts for rainy days of apron-skirt sewing and head-scarf trimming and she sings folk music to her aloe vera plants. She collects wings and birds flutter at the nape of her neck, across her walls and in her sketchbook. Gin and tonic does not ever taste like an elixir for your soul as when Libby makes you one; unless of course she bestows upon you one of her Bloody Marys. I asked her once what she put in them that made them so delicious.

Pieces of my heart, baby.

She dances barefoot when she cooks and occupies the whole kitchen with the cinnamon swirls of her energy; each mouthful of her creations, no matter the dish, tastes like smiling with someone you love at sunrise.

She skips through pots of paint and leaves her footprints over landscapes of canvas that you yearn to follow, knowing your feet could never leave a mark behind to compare. Flower bulbs bloom under her palms, tears turn to snowflakes of salt that you blow away on the wind like a dandelion wish, and her armour and courage turn arrows to ivy leaves.

Libby, of green and grace, hides the sun behind a dark shawl so you can fly as high and far and wide as you like without ever being afraid of the melt or of the burn. Being in her company feels like stumbling upon a door left ajar that leads you into a world decorated with geranium candles; red, ripe and delicious.

And occasionally, every so often when you’re around her, breathing her in like curls of smoke from a sandalwood flame, you’ll notice something in the sky; a circle formation of six birds who, at the quiver of her eyebrow, scatter on the wind with their wings winking at you like black diamonds.

You’ve done it again, Miss! That dark, tragic side that everyone secretes irrespective of their demeanour or appearance, for the first time (as far as i’ve read) so perfectly and without melodrama portrayed. Holly, I’ve given up trying to figure out how you do it. I’m just glad you can.
    xx

That dark, tragic side that everyone secretes irrespective of their demeanour or appearance

bek, i’ve gotta tell you, i loved the insight you had into this piece… for it was a dynamic to the work that i was not consciously aware of when i wrote this. the reference to the blackbirds, the darkness in the sky that scatters, the feathers… were all linked to libby’s love of birds fair or otherwise… but this scope you had into the work is so interesting and i’ve thought about it so much… thank you with all my heart. and thank you for being so incredibly lovely and supportive of my work. it means the world to me.

  • Mardra

    Mardra

Wow. This is a piece that is fun to read outloud – it sings itself.

  • Holly Ringland replied

mardra, i was seventeen when i went to my first pearl jam concert. it had a profound impact on me (besides blowing my appreciation for their music into an obsession) because of the sheer volume of people who were there just like me, singing along with every word. not long after that, i wrote a list of the most amazing experiences i imagined i’d like to experience – one being a song writer standing on stage in front of a 50,000 crowd with their guitar and strumming enough chords to elicit screams from the masses who burst into song and start singing words they’d written. it blew me away – the idea of hearing so many voices sing words back to you that came from a late night at the kitchen table or waiting for the bus. in a few of the lovely comments you’ve left on my work, you’ve told me that you’ve read my writing out loud. and the idea of that… well, thanks for making me realise a wished-for experience.

Your writing is just so refreshing and alive! I read it twice and smiled with every picture you painted in my mind… better than painting though because paintings don’t smell of cinnamon or taste of smiling at sunset with someone you love. Your words are a feast for the senses.

I did not compare your writing to Nabokov’s. I pointed out that it compares itself. And that does not mean it is in anyway derivative. Just equally well sculpted. Comparatively lush.

  • Holly Ringland replied

well said – i completely understand what you mean. and i thank you all the same. perhaps what i should have said was ‘associate’... if you ‘associate’ my work with nabokov’s. either way, i’m glad you found my writing in this piece standing on its own, thanks bradley :)

“She wears the days of March in her eyes; summer melting to autumn in threads of fawn and gold.”

for some reason, this reminded me of Little Green, by Joni Mitchell. I hope the comparison appeals to you- she’s my all-time favourite so be assured I mean it in praise.

  • Holly Ringland replied

ms3! this is such a late reply… but i wanted you to know… if my words reminded you in any way of the sublime joni mitchell, little green nonetheless… well, it leaves me beaming and warm. thanks so much.
