Solstice

Solstice belongs to the following groups:

Flash Fiction, Graphic Scratch, The Word Tree and WMG

It happens twice a year.

When the wind changes and carries incense of burnt earth and fire, I know she’s close.

She wears ribbons of sadness in her hair and every time I have broken her in the lines around her eyes.

Yet still.

She shines twice a year.

I wear Old Spice. She told me once it was a good memory of a good time. After that I bought seventeen bottles and lined them up; each a talisman for failed second chances.

I crave her light like a flower pushing through frozen winter earth for the first warm rays of spring. She is the lingering gold in the chalky ashes of fire.

Sometimes I watch my empty hands shake when the earthquakes come. All I see is porcelain that cannot be glued back together.

But still.

I can smell fire on the hot wind.

It happens twice a year.

This is really lovely. I couldn’t help but think when I read this She told me once it was a good memory of a good time that perhaps she never was serious about him. Well, at least not as serious as he was. But there’s obviously a whole other story there. : )

  • Holly Ringland replied

You got it Z… I guess the thing with Flash Fiction pieces is that however you read into something, it’s only the tip of the whole story ;) Thanks so much for reading and for your lovely thoughtful comment, I really appreciate it.

Incredible imagery Holly – I can feel emotion bubbling like lava just below the surface. Somehow all you write touches that core. Beautifully done.
