“The Five Barred gate”
Every evening as the day’s light is disappearing , the five barred gate mysteriously opens ,
The sound of hooves on the gravel are clear , the rattle of the carriage, wheels grinding into the gravel as it speeds along this dark unused lane . The gate is swinging and as the carriage approaches the gate opens wide , nobody is there , the carriage has no driver , but there is a mysterious woman sat with a blanket around her inside the carriage ,her face is pale but unclear . The carriage races through the open gate and disappears into the night .. Who is she, where did she come from , where is she going ?
The gate slams shut again , until the same time the next night when the same ritual happens again. But she is never seen returning .Who can she be? Or is there more than one woman ?…..
“The Next Night
I couldn’t let this go , so I went back to the churchyard to find the grave the woman had been weeping over . Eventually I came across it , his name Captain Edward Bonnington .
Died 1814 , just before the end of the Napoleonic War .
Husband of Constance ..
I had to do some research I wanted to find out more . I found he was a brash captain who had pushed his ship and his crew to the limits in pursuit of a French war vessel , most of his crew were killed in the pursuit and he was severly injured but managed to steer his ship into port where he was taken to a makeshift hospital where he died a week later . His body was brought home to Cornwall to be buried and here is where he lies.
His young wife was desperately ill with typhoid and unable to attend the funeral so she never knew where he was buried and she died shortly afterwards . She could not rest in peace until she found her dearest loved one .
Her search was now over and she returned to her resting place and has never been seen since .
