Bridge over the Canal by Irene Burdell

Canvas Prints

Leeds Liverpool Canal, this is the half way point between Leeds and Liverpool give or take a few yards. Church Accrington. There used to be lots of mills in this area but they have all been demolished now.
Britain’s longest inland waterway (127 miles) was opened in 1816. The Leeds Liverpool Canal took 46 years to build, and finally came in at five times the original budget. The first part to open was the lock-free section from Skipton to Bingley, in 1773. The canal was busy all through the nineteenth century and carried stone, coal and other goods.

Wonderfully well done Irene. Not long ago I read a book by a couple who spent nearly all their lives living in a narrow boat, pottering up and down most of England’s canals. A great story.

  • I would love to have one but just for the summer .
I read a book about a couple and their whippet who travelled around the country then decided to go to France via the channel ,( MUst have been mad ) it was a good book , I wonder if it was the same one ?
