One of my very favourite s of the Greek Islands I have visited.
Skopelos Town is one of the most picturesque ports in the Sporades with a long harbour wall and tree-lined promenade, backed by houses rising up the hillside.
The countryside is a mixture of pine woods and fruit orchards dotted with the domes of scores of chapels and monasteries – there is said to be one for every day of the year.
Skopelos is much less well endowed with sandy beaches than its noisier neighbour Skiathos. Most beaches are stone and shingle and can be found along the south coast between Stafylos and Loutraki.
Most beaches are served by the island bus which runs the runs the length of Skopelos, but many still require a longish walk down rough tracks.
The island is certain to benefit from the popularity of the hit movie ‘Mama Mia’, starring Meryl Streep and Pierce Brosnan, which features many location shots on Skopelos.
