The Unexplainable

Written purely for Creepy Writers Inc and my first attempt at a story with a little bit of blood…enjoy!

‘Ooh! A penny!’
Clara bent down to pick up the shiny coin and then BAM, she was sprawled across the pavement like a giraffe on ice skates. I looked around for the cause of the attack but there was no-one, only us. We were on Third Avenue, a tree lined street in the North West of the state that had been our home since we were both very young. As neighbours, Clara and I often walked off to the shops together and I can’t remember how many times we’d ridden our bikes down that street together.
‘Ouch!’ Clara squealed, rubbing at her forehead. A dark gash that couldn’t possibly have been created by the asphalt was split across her forehead and blood was pumping out of it at an alarming rate.
‘Help me, please!’ Clara begged, pounding my arm with her fists. I tried to grab her but she jumped away.
‘Clara, stay still and I’ll help you!’
‘I can’t,’ she sobbed. She continued to move further and further away from me but it was not out of choice. Her feet dragged along the floor and it seemed to me that she was being carried away by some invisible force. I ran after her, desperately trying to rescue her but a dark line of blood trickled from her neck where she had been cut by her captor.
‘Leave, she’s mine!’ a raspy voice hissed.
‘No! Stop! Leave her alone!’ I screamed. But Clara was already too far away and there were cuts and scratches appearing all over her arms. I sank down on the street and cried for a friend who would surely be killed.
Just as I was about to head home, a piercing scream filled the air and then Clara’s body was there, beside me. I couldn’t look at her but people came streaming out of their houses and each and everyone of them turned to me.

How could I explain what had happened when I was the only person on the street? How could I explain when my friend was dead and in my hand was a bloodied knife? I dropped to the floor and screamed, and screamed and screamed. I didn’t plan on stopping.
