The Illusion
The Illusion belongs to the following groups:
All Things Poetic, Artistic, PhilosophicalBefore Copernicus, confirmed later by Galileo in subtle measurement, the world was thought to be as it appeared, a stable core to a shifting universe. And even now it still seems this way as we look into the sky. We know we are deceived but the emotions revel in the deception.
And so it is with us, each individually. The world about us we would believe moves and we are somehow separated from it. This is of course a faint illusion but not one easily pierced for there is some comfort in the false importance.
To know the reality requires also a subtle measurement and not one easily shared. In the echoes of loving kindness, empathy and the words of the soul we learn of the deep connectedness. We understand that we are simply circling in a strange and endless dance.
Galileo was to be tortured for threatening to reveal the falsity of our earthly import. Our inner inquisition continues to try and sustain the lie of our own centrality.

Wisdom, and through humility we learn our true and rightful place in the scheme of all things

When you think how small we are… how vast and empty the sky above… a weaker soul might be sorry that they didn’t visit heavenly wrath on Galileo sooner. I mean to say that a strong religious belief is cosier.

Great facts of history. Amazing how life mimics the total circle—in almost everything.

Fantastic writing! We are so tiny in a vast universe…This brings to mind Native American’s and their respect for a circular continuum of all life!!

Polly thank you so much – I suspect having looked at your portfolio that we both may share a bit of an interest in Thoreau or at least the romantics and their attitude to nature. I also live in the country and love to see the cycles of life and participate in them.

Cycles are everywhere. Beautifully expressed Martin.

Not to detract from the main theme here, but could I mention that a non-geocentric view existed in places before Copernicus. I’d like to give particular mention to Aristarchus of Samos, for example (who was originally cited by Copernicus in De Revolutionibus.
There’s even some (disputed) evidence that a mathematical argument for a heliocentric model existed in India around 500BCE.

Yes, Christ spoken of we will sow as we reap, echoing the idea of karma which speaks of a greater justice we cannot easily see.
