Farewell Steve Jobs

Like many I feel a sense of loss at the passing of Steve Jobs.

I feel some connection with him based on a commitment to a spiritual life and a joy in design. Not sure we would have got on that well if we had ever met – I think he would consider me a bit animated (or arty!) but who can tell.

Anyway two quotes of his which echo for me and which also lie at the heart of RedBubble.

“Almost everything—all external expectations, all pride, all fear of embarrassment or failure—these things just fall away in the face of death, leaving only what is truly important. Remembering that you are going to die is the best way I know to avoid the trap of thinking you have something to lose. You are already naked. There is no reason not to follow your heart.

In most people’s vocabularies, design means veneer. It’s interior decorating. It’s the fabric of the curtains of the sofa. But to me, nothing could be further from the meaning of design. Design is the fundamental soul of a human-made creation that ends up expressing itself in successive outer layers of the product or service."

I see serendipity in RedBubble releasing our iPhone cases at exactly the same time (within a few minutes) of the announcement of his death. Not sure it is meaningful but it feels it.

I just watched his Stanford talk and yes, I agree that releasing the new covers is serendipitous as well. It’s a fine tribute, imho! Vale Steve Jobs!

I know very little about the man apart from his name and his creation… but it seems I have missed out.
Thanks for the link, Mel – I will find a little moment to learn a little more about the person behind the identity.
I think it’s a human trait to allow external expectations + our own pride + fear of embarrassment/failure to dictate our thoughts and actions … A man who can dismiss them as ‘unimportant’ (by inference) and urge others to ‘follow your heart’ instead is certainly worth finding time for. I’m only sad that it took his passing for me to go and investigate :(

such a extraordinary contribution to the human technological revolution. I used to use atari hardware in music production, back in the days before pcs. I know a lot of those folk went on to develop apple mac, and though i have never owned any mac or i device, i still have the greatest respect fot the man who almost single-handedly changed the face of technology in the 21st century. Salute!
