Fogging the Glasses
I bend fixing a trough. The horses gather around a little bit thirsty and curious. Its cold and I can feel them close. A young, brave colt nudges up close, fogging my glasses. Making the work difficult. I push at hm – not annoyed. I return to the task. They jostle about, strange and engaging.
Later that night we find one of the horses, Harry, has come down with colic. He is a big, bold adolescent. Beautiful and scared with pain. My wife takes him to the vet hospital late last night.
He is there now, almost certainly going to die. I am willing the universe to a different outcome.

that is a life in a tiny little and beautifully written personal view…. you write in a way that lets me be there at the trough with those beautiful horses in the crisp cold air….. but….. but Martin sweetie…. we can will all we like….. the universe has it’s own particular endpoint…. and making us happy is maybe not one of it’s most salient points….. I hope the horse lives…. but if death is due a call at yours….. who would you hold out to it’s embrace..?..... it’s not ours to make that call…. if Harry lives then it is as god wills…. and if not be calm and relieved it’s not you or your wife or children…... miracles exist but sometimes they come wrapped in rags….. look beyond the potential loss of this lovely young horse and know how blessed you are…..

A beautiful piece of writing Pilgrim – you paint a great picture of a
scene in your working life; the parting lines are very sad – and I pray
for miracles containing humane outcomes in the least, and at best, good news.
My thoughts etc …

Del, thank you for your wishes. As Juilee says the universe will take its course and we are witnesses. He is sort of hanging on. We hope.

Your poor family… everyone must be so sad. I hope he gets better but at least he knows he is a much loved horse. Take care and be strong. It might be his time to become an Angel. xxx

If I could I would take your pain
and let it wash away in the rain
Secretly I’d hold him, will him well
then make him promise to never tell
and should all my hopes and wishes fail
may I hold your hand while you tell the tale
of how he came to be in strife
and of your love for his great life
Martin I hope he is well now!
You are in my thoughts!
