Memory

Standing on the brink
I look down
Through the depths
In the pool of memories
I pick a spot
And dive
Into the gloom
Is it still real
This remembrance
How far can I go
Before the dark and murk
Of the ages
Alters shapes and sounds
How fallable
Is this human sense
How tenuous
The recollection
Yet there is one sense
That never fails
To tug the soul
To clearer vision …
A smell
A scent
A perfume rare
And I am condensed
Within that memory
Explicit pictures flood my mind
And I am there
Once again.

Memory

Memory is the most fallable sense we have unless we are pulled back by a smell … then the memory becomes sharp and clear. It can be quite a jolt when it happens usually when we are totally unaware.

Memory belongs to the following groups:

All Things Poetic, Prose, Philosophical., The Scots are Coming and Writers' Market

So, so very true. I use to date a man who always smelled of this lovely aftershave, and every time I smell that he floods back in my memories. Wonderful, and magical that memory can be. Thanks for the nice poem.

Smells never fail … even the other way round – if you have a clear memory then the smell is usually with it!

This is great. A fantastic description of the little tiny things that can trigger powerful emotional responses. One of the beautiful truths of our existence.

I know exactly what you mean Dave … in a way that is the beauty of getting older … your memory changes things to suit yourself LOL

Oh yes! This I can relate to. The fallible…..what was I going to say.

Very true about the power of a smell to trigger memories.
