Aurora on canvas
Taken in January 2005, just south of Perth, Scotland. I looked out the window here late one evening to see a “cloud” of luminous green oriented downwards – “that’s no cloud!” and 5mins later I was a couple of miles away in the middle of nowhere on the road south of Moncrieffe Hill, admiring the pretty greens and reds :)
Aurora on canvas belongs to the following groups:
Astronomy, Atmospheric Optics, Conservation Photography, Hard Science Rocks, Mood & Ambience - Strictly Photos, Skyscapes, Timelapse/Long Exposure Photography and United Kingdom Available for sale asGreeting Cards, Matted Prints, Laminated Prints, Mounted Prints and Canvas Prints

Dave Pearson
I spy Ursa Major in there too.
Michael Bermi...
WOW, when I started to read your description, my jaw dropped….”PERTH”...and then I read Scotland…ha!
Fantastic shot.
Helene Kippert
Awesome shot!
georgiegirl
Beautiful!! I didn’t know you could see them from Scotland… did you add the stars or were you clever enough to get them when you took the photo?
PigleT
Thanks folks.
georgiegirl: One does not go around faking astrophotography.
Chris Clark

I’ve seen the aurora borrealis many times in Soctland, in Alaska, even in Rochester, New York. The best is in my homeland, Scotland and you have captured it well. And, the capture of the Big Dipper is awesome.
Roddy Atkinson
Great photo, have never seen the northern lights but hopefully this will change in Feb. when I go to Iceland.
Ian Porter
My son reckoned he has seen the Northern lights here in Peeblesshire and I didn’t believe him!

Roslyn Lunetta
another great sky shot! the sharpness of the stars is outstanding. how did you do it? i am luckly where i live in the mountains of NH, USA we get the lights but I have not been able to catch them at all, soooo care to share your photo knowledge?
PigleT
Thanks all :)
Roddy: Good luck in February :)
Roslyn: I use SpaceWeather amongst other sites to keep an eye out for aurora potential (there’s a useful link from there to NOAA down the left side of the page). According to the exif data on my original version of this aurora photo , it was taken thus:
Model: NIKON D70.
Shutter-speed: 13.000s
Aperture: f/4.000
ISO rating: 800
Timestamp: 2005:01:21 23:34:22.
Focal length: 18.000mm
In practice up to 30s is necessary, obviously almost as wide an aperture as you can get.
dinghysailor1
Now that’s a real capture!!!!Phenomenal work!
Roddy Atkinson
Thanks PigleT, It’s interesting to see you captured this with aperture f/4 and a shutter speed of just 13secs. From what I was reading I was a bit worried about my f/2.8. You’ve given me hope, now just got to wish for clear skies!
Danielle Farley
so pretty, that is one of my goals, to go see and take some pics. great shot.
Scheherazade
