After the major Christchurch earthquake destroyed the cathedral and toppled and broke other statues it was decided to secure the angel with purple straps and white padding.
The Citizens’ War Memorial/ Soldiers’ War Memorial shows an angel bending the sword of war. This is supposed to symbolise peace rather than war. The lowest figure is of a mother symbolising the sacrifice she made in bringing up sons to be killed or maimed in war. It was created by William Trethewey.
