GRANDMA- FROM YOUR FAMILY –(by Rebecca)
MARY: the meaning of your name is unclear
I choose “Beloved” as your best –fit.
Yes Beloved mother, grandma, great grandma
Who nurtured us as babes
Whose sweet lullabies still echo in our minds.
You were ever the polite and proper lady
Whose example would guide us as we grew.
Your preference for perfection shone through
To the last parslied pea laid in its warm fine china bowl,
The magic of your Sunday lunch or
Extra special Christmas feasts….
You even made toast special!
Grilled carefully. One side softer for the spreading.
Memories of sweet, crisp, ironed sheets
tucked in just so,
Gently cooled, milky tea brewed especially for our dog!!!
The cultured lady who brought to us
ballet, music, art,
Who clipped newspaper tit-bits of interest
Just for our reading pleasure.
The one who would dial her telephone with just
One thing to say:
“Hello darling- turn on the ABC!!” click..brr….
Seaside holidays shared with joy,
Funny little sing-songs and laughter.
The way you could never watch
a lion land its prey
And with a tear, turn away with sympathy and say
“ Oh no! the poor devil. Oh!”
Your detailed, meandering stories, told always at great length..
“Stop me if you’ve heard it!”
But we could listen to your tales time-again to this day
All these treasured memories
Stored up in our hearts
Will continue on your legend
Our beloved matriarch.
Farewell beloved neighbour
Thankyou beloved friend.
Your sweet face we all will miss
But now rest at last beloved wife
And be at peace
With your once lost “lovely Roy”
While we raise a toast of celebration
“To 94 years of Mary!”
