scratch disk
I can’t get my little head around this one.
I have as much memory as PC can take. I see the figure at the bottom LH corner in PS often saying as little as 6%... I know this means i am doing something wrong, and I know it is something to do with SCRATCH DISK, but i don’t know what or how to fix it (in layman’s terms, please}
(I do make sure there aren’t other programmes open, but are they still running somewhere and chewing up the memory?)

how much memory and what operating system?
have you got more than one drive? how much hard drive space do you have?
Ram is the memory for crunching all the computer thoughts but things like photoshop can use alot so they are clever and can use your hardrive space to store info (kinda like spreading paper all over your desk because your folder is full) this is what the ‘scratch disk’ thing is…
What is the LH corner selected too? i know of scratch size, performance, current tool can be selected? (there is an arrow next to the area that lets you change what is shown in that box)
Also virus checkers in the B/G can use up a bit of memory… there are a few things it could be…

thanks for replying I will look at your blog. Although I have been driving a pc without any major accidents for 6 years, I am an ignoramus about what goes on nder the bonnet!!!

I looked at the arrow and for scratch size it says 50%. I seem to have drives C D E F and removable drives JKLMNO. I did have an external hard drive for backup and that has packed it in. I need to see if it is only the power in and the data can be retrieved. If not I am not going to let anguish destroy me!!

set your scratch to the bigger of the hard drives (preferably the one without your windows etc on it)
You can set that in the photoshop prefs…
Basically if it isn’t broken dont worry… if its crashing or cant handle your work load maybe something is wrong…
