For years we’ve been told we’re not good enough,
We can’t measure up. Don’t have the right stuff.
If you aren’t pretty. If you aren’t cool.
Don’t take their advice. Won’t follw the rules.
The people you see, in those slick magazines,
Are by far much cooler, then we’ve ever been.
Our hair is all wrong. Our clothes are too old.
Why don’t we just wear the styles we’re told?
How dare you wear the things you like?
They have no labels… They can’t be right.
Your shoes didn’t cost 200.00 dollars?
You don’t work out for near enough hours!
Your hair is too long… or not long enough.
Your’e doing your makeup with all the wrong stuff.
If you want to be like the players and stars,
You better be driving all the right cars.
Does your kid have an I-pad?
And Uggs on her feet?
So she’ll be accepted,
Look cool while she Tweets.
But it isn’t the things that define who we are.
It isn’t the house, And It isn’t the car,
Be brave and proclaim, “I am who i am!
I may not be perfect, but i don’t give a damn!!”
You are not your shoes. You are not your jewelry.
You are not your cars. But who are you truly?
Look down deep inside and know your own self.
Do you like what you see, without any wealth?
If your stripped down completely, and the trappings all gone,
You must like who you are when they tell you your wrong.
Who says their opinion is the only right one?
You are NOT what you wear.
You were YOU all along.
Things! Do they really define who we are as a person? Yes, they are details of our lives but when do they stop being “parts of who we are” and become “who we are.”?
