An Act of Love

She screams out in her agony,
She cries out in her pain.
She knows there is a reason,
But it hurts her just the same.

She cannot help the cries to “Stop!”,
That pour out from her chest.
She knows it serves a purpose,
She knows it’s for the best.

She tells herself she has no choice,
This task she must get done.
For when the worst is over,
She’ll have a daughter or a son.

She’s felt it move inside her.
It’s tiny beating heart.
But just as one pain finishes,
She feels another start.

She knows she’ll love it desperately,
Whatever it may be.
And when the work is over,
It’s worth the agony.

She fills her heart with courage,
And finishes the task.
As her last cries die away,
Her angel comes at last.

It fills her arms with warmth and hope,
The pain a memory.
All that matters is the child,
Not the misery.

Artist's Description

Childbirth is probably one of the most painful, memorable and fufilling experiences I’ve ever been through. You feel like you just can’t take anymore and yet you must. The only thing that brings you through is knowing what you’re working for. And then that cry… that sound… your baby… It’s indescribable.
