Soft pastels and pastel pencils drawing on burgundy Colorfix paper. 46cm x 32cm
This drawing was almost a disaster. I finished it and was satisfied with the result. I then sprayed fixative over it, as it is going to be a gift for my Dad in South Africa and must survive almost 2 weeks of Xmas mail.
Well, the fixative seemed to have drawn all the burgundy colour of the paper through the drawing and my 11 hours of soft delecate blending vanished!!! The whole drawing became a dark muddy mess…
I was so depressed, I had nightmares as to how to fix it.
I then painstakingly pretty much re-drew all of it over the original drawing. Mostly retouching the highlights, as all the lighter colours became dark.
Needless to say, this is now fixative-free and I will have to find a creative non-smudging way to mail it overseas!!
I’m super happy that I could save it.

    It really came out great!

  • Hi Chelsea, yes, I was so nervous this morning having to ‘re-do’ almost the whole drawing. But I’m happy with the save :-)
Now I must just figure out how to protect it in the mail1!! AAargh!!

I think it’s wonderful. Sending the link to my mom as she has a bathroom she has done in a beach house look. This would go great in there!

  • Thanx Lizzie! Yes, would look good in a beach house. My Dad lives in a seaside town on the West coust of South Africa, and I made this specially with his house decor in mind, as a Xmas present.

I often have the same problem when using fixative. The burgundy paper has come through on mine after spraying as well. Good luck sending it. Possibly try glace? paper over it to post.

  • Hi Dianne! I dont know what the other artists do to keep their pastels from smudging if they dont ‘fix’ it… How/where do they store/display them?
Yes, I was thinking to wrap it in regular wax-paper, then put hard cardboard on the back and front, so it wont bend and wrapping the whole lot in bubble wrap inside a thick card-type Aussie Post envelope, if they have the size. Otherwise I’ll make my own. With clear (large print!! hie-hie!) unwrapping instructions for Dad!!

  • thanx Alexandra. I was uncertain about that little green one. But it doesn’t really look odd. It fits in somehow.

I found you on Deborah Holman’s Comments section. I smiled at the lovely pun on Picasso. I guess you too are a cat lover. This is a lovely painting of yours by the way.

  • Thanx so much for you comment!!
I wish I had thought of my Pseudonym myself, so I can’t take credit :-) It was the name of a family members cat. The little kitty had every colour imagineable in her fur and someone said she looked like Picasso’s palette. So there Picatso was born!! I’ve used this name for many years doing all sort of creative things under the ‘Picatso Creations’ umbrella.
And YESSS!! I am most certainly a cat lover. I have 2 ginger furrball boy cats myself :-)
