Driving into the Wildfire

This photo was taken by me without a tripod whilst fighting the “Great Divide – Northern Complex” fires on the night of December 6th, 2006.

Task: We were sent in as a group of 15 fire tankers to ensure the fire did not break out of control lines that had been put in place 2 hours before the start of our shift.

Method: We had a very experienced leader who advised us to make sure the fire had burnt to the containment lines by sunrise…....this involved driving through the fire front to make sure it didn’t cross the road…...

Outcome: After 14 hours on the fire ground, we successfully achieved the goal. All of us were absolutely exhausted but exuberant in knowing that the fire did not cross the road…...which took 45 minutes to drive from one end to the other at the start of the night.
