David and Goliath

Black Saturday – Stanley 8/02/2009 (Sunday night)

This photo was one of my most memorable shots during the campaign to fight the Black Saturday fires which ravaged Victoria on Saturday 7th February, 2009. 173 people died including one town (Marysville) that was wiped entirely from the earth. Thousands of homes were destroyed in a number of different fires across the state, but the stories of survival make it all worthwhile going in to tackle these fires head strong.

This photo was taken whilst we were undertaking asset protection (protecting a house) in Stanley from the approaching fire. It shows how a fire that was relatively sedentary for the best part of 5 hours suddenly raced up a tree and started showering embers on the house to the left. Two fire fighters are caught unawares and are looking at the emerging threat with hoses ready to go.

We did mange to save this house, although many other structures weren’t so lucky.
