The Faerie Pools, Isle of Skye

The Faerie pools are very photogenic, and I like them best on a ‘bad’ weather day, when you can attempt to capture the mood of the surrounding dark and brooding mountains. This view is looking towards a famous climb, called “Stovepipe Gully”.
The rocks are slippery, not an easy place to set up a tripod, and I have been observed by more sane folk than myself, crawling on hands and knees for the best vantage point !
There is a trail/walk alongside the burn and various pools that goes quite some way into the hills, amidst very grandiose scenery….....but prepare for wet feet, the ground is amazingly boggy here …...... and those rocks you have to clamber over to get your shot ? EXTRA slippery !!

This is a three RAW HDR, shot on my Canon EOS 40D, mounted on the tripod, polariser fitted, to lose two stops of light for the blur effect, f27, underexposed by half a stop, then a +2EV and -2EV from that reading, iso 100, auto wb, processed in Photomatix, then in Adobe CS3 with various tweaks to colours etc., and where the water was burned out by the HDR process, layered in parts of the original 0EV file.

The last time we were up that way, we went skinny dipping. I got bitten by every bloody midge and cleg in the island .. bites in places where I didn,t even know I had places. Great place, mind you .. especially the pool with the underwater arch.

  • PhotosEcosse replied

Aye, with the heather and bog myrtle, combined with the wettest of bogs, a superb breeding ground for every biting insect you can think of ! Especially disgusting Ticks !

Rare sunlit beams catch flecks of shine
On the rocks where the Faeries play
Through all the passing of father time
There has now come this day
When if you lay in boggy peat
hold your breath … be still
You may see the Faerie Folk Festival

In this land of mountains and stormy skies
There are burns where faeries live
A word of warning to the wise
You’d best have plenty to give
For if they catch you peeping
the wee folk of the glen
There’s a high charge to watch ye ken

All the glorious sights you could ever behold
From when you were young til when you’d be old
Is shown on display for you, so I’m told
When you see the Faerie Folk Festival

    But
You ‘ll not see again that gathering sky
Nor the craggy mountains aimed so high
For your sight will be lost to the wee folk so nigh
    And ne’er your wanderings return

Up on the slopes of brooding hills
    where the weather closes in
There are pools where the faeries can be found
    Making a terrible din
They cannae move the greedy man
And he’s is left to pitifully weep
He’s paid the price to the Festival for a peep!

    adgray©2009 (Just then again lol)

This is a bit of fun! (lol) I hope you like the play on the location’s name!
I have to admit though I have a bit more Irish than Scottish in me and my accent favours the Irish (lol) So we can work on it if it’s too Irish and not Scottish enough! (lol)

I have to say though you are queen of the brooding stormy sky and master of the warm damp colours of your land!
One day I’ll get my feet wet in the bogs too!
    Chookas! ♥
