As close as I got to the action, the smoke, the heat , the debris, the water spray and the noise, firemen screaming to be heard, senses overwhelmed, numb, too much to process in the midst of it. You just react, press on, fight the fire, do your job, time to reflect is later, when the job is done, the fire is tamed. He stood there, eyes never left the target, never flinched, focused, doing his job with madness all around him. I didn’t stay long.

Nikkormat with 50 mm Nikkor Lens Tri-X film.

“There must be some kind of way out of here said the joker to the thief. There’s too much confusion, I can’t get no relief.” Bob Dylan

The Health and Safety guys would have a heart attack if they saw any of our FireFighters do that today! No face shield, incorrect hose drill, no support on line right behind to help brace him from the pressure! We’ve come a long way since then!

  • Thanks Allen, I remember thinking afterwards how bad this had to be for their health. I could only take a few minutes that close, eyes watering, coughing, seemed crazy to me at the time. tony
