Someone Took My Horse

Bodie California, What a place when it was happening! Much of it had burnt down in the 1930s but what is left is quite something to see. This place is out in the middle of nowhwere 13 miles out on what used to be a dirt road. I have been comming out here since I was 15. The place has changed some. Back in the 60s there wasnt much to stop people from walking off with things. Today it is a state park and is protected by the state.Rangers actually live in some of the buildings. Yikes live ghosts. In the old days gunfights were a form of entertainment and it wasnt uncommon to have two or three a day. Kind of like east LA drive bys. Whats changed?

Fantastic image … glorious depth of color and detail … and WOWZER look at those clouds!!!!! Loved your write up as well … yes, east LA and Washington DC as well!!! How far we humans have come, lol!!!!!

  • photosbyflood replied

Thanks Lois! When I first started shooting earlier in the day the clouds were about 3 stops different from the foreground so I put on the trusty ND .09 and caught those angry clouds with the great wood tones. It rained pretty good later in the day.

Your results are fantabulous!!!!! Just last week I treated myself to the Cokin ND4 (medium) gradual nd grey. I’m still getting the hang of it, but have high hopes for less blown out skies as, in my humble opinion, a good sky can make or break an image (have been known to ADD a cool sky when the spirit moves me, lol!!!!) Something you clearly didn’t have to worry about in this beauty. By the way … LOVE the title in this one, too!!!!

Thanks Lois! I use the LEE system it alows me to move my grad up and down to cover the area I want most toned down, The system also allows me to stack up to three filters to tone it down more or darken it up enough to do a long exposure in a well lit area. The system i bought came with sunset filters, coral strips and cool down filters I really havent liked the results from those yet.

That sounds like what I have as well … comes with a ring for the lens … then a frame?? And yes, there are slots for more than one filter. I bought everything separately … was only interested in the grad nd. And yes, mine also can be moved up and down … and rolled over, too, if I want to do a vertical. I still have so much to learn … lol … but I’m getting there slowly but surely. Takes a while when you have to rely on your own brain cells to untangle the knots, if you know what I mean!!!

  • photosbyflood replied

Yeap thats the set up! That system works realy well. Your bubble has a lot of great images to look at I have enjoyed looking at your work! I will keep up with what you are doing. Thank you!

Another amazing image..Photobysflood!!! I agree with everything Lois has said !!! This looks like my kinda place to see !! Mine are a little more modern ghost towns! Would love to see one with as much history as I am sure this one has!! Excellent work !!!!

  • photosbyflood replied

This one really does have some rich history and some of the buildings still have a lot of the old things in them especialy on main street. The general store looks like they just walked away. It really is kind of weird!

Wonderful shot, amazing atmosphere! It must have been a strange feeling to visit the place after so many years again?!

  • photosbyflood replied

Good Morning Artual no I go here about every 2 years and every time I go I have something different in mind I am looking for. The time before this I went looking for reflections of Bodie through it windows. I had some successes. This time I went to capture its buldings and how they are holding up and I deffinately wanted to catch the leaners. The weather was a bonus!

Good Morning Estes thanks. This has got to be one of the best ghost towns out there. Calico is OK but its commercial. I need to go back to Old Tucson. I remember it but I was 2 years old!

Congrats for the feature, I just can just repaeat myself-amazing shot!!!

  • photosbyflood replied

Thank You very much Artual for the congratulations. Bodie is a great side trip and isnt really commercial. It costs $5.00 a carload to park and you are basicly on your own to discover whats there. If you want a guided tour they have them, but for the most part it is very unstructured. The one thing they demand is you dont take anything but pictures. It is some great American History!
