One sure sign of fall out west, is the annual sheep drive through our quiet little valley. Today, three men on foot, with a dozen or so canine helpers, moved two or three hundred sheep about 15 miles to winter pasture down in the lowlands.

Most of the sheep herders come from South America; Peru, Chile, or Guatemala. Dogs are an important component in tending sheep on the open range. Border collies are the preferred breed for herding, while Great Pyrrenese and Tibetan mastiffs are often used to protect the flocks from predators.
