OH! No! You didn't ! ! ! by Arla M. Ruggles

New Year’s Eve visitor – stayed under the house for a few days, and then disappeared into the hinterlands. I suspect he didn’t like the noise from above.

Great Basin Life exists … between … high desert expanses and majestic mountain wilderness.

Daily, I watch the winds of change sweeping away what remains of our western culture and heritage, and the land that has produced them.

My mission is to preserve as much as I can, of that which will soon vanish, through my photography.

Hi Arla! Will these things attack you???? Another terrific shot too.

  • Yes, they are notoriously ferocious. In the “Dark Ages” of American history, badgers were often pitted against fighting dogs, and even bears, in blood sports. Even large predators will rarely mess with them.

Wow! I saw a documentary on some kind of African badgers and they were bloody awesome. It sounds like yours are the same. Would they have to feel threatened to have a go at you? Sorry about all the silly questions.

  • Not silly at all. Some people say they will attack without provocation, but every other encounter I’ve had with them, they just went scurrying off into a hole or thick brush.

I didn’t take any huge risk with this one; there was a low fence between us, that he’d have had to climb over to get to me. I had my exit strategy in place before I ever approached.
