Triumvirate by Arla M. Ruggles

Little did I know when I created this artwork, that it would become a memorial tribute to the three horses shown, and to the thousands of wild horses being removed from their native homes on the Nevada high desert ranges; even while tens of thousands more languish for years on end, in holding facilities throughout the west and midwest.

This small family group was taken from their native home in early February, 2011, during the infamous
Antelope Complex WHMA wild horse removal project along with more than one thousand others.

The loss of these horses from the American landscape is a tragedy of enormous proportion, and once accomplished, can never be undone.

Great Basin Life exists … between … high desert expanses and majestic mountain wilderness.

Daily, I watch the winds of change sweeping away what remains of our western culture and heritage, and the land that has produced them.

My mission is to preserve as much as I can, of that which will soon vanish, through my photography.
