All my girls: Spring, the rescued mustang filly, Maggie and Mocha. I had gone down to catch some update shots of Spring, and I didn’t see what happened to cause this moment of chaos …

(No animals were harmed in the making of this picture.)

Spring is the orphaned mustang foal we found and rescued near here, last June (2008).

Maggie was found battered and abandoned in rural New Mexico. She is thought to be part Australian Kelpie. A month after coming to Nevada, she gave birth to Mocha (and nine other mixed-breed puppies).

Maggie and Spring belong to my friend, Ray. Mocha lives with me, and has only visited with Spring a few times before. She sees her mother very often.

These two dogs have the natural herding instinct, and it seems that Maggie was going to show Mocha how to herd a horse.

Spring apparently had other ideas.

(The horse and dog interact on a daily basis, and I am certain this encounter was about establishing boundaries, and that none of those involved were in harm’s way.)

About Arla M. Ruggles

Great Basin Life exists on the fringes … between … high desert expanses and majestic mountain wilderness.
Daily, I watch the winds of change sweeping away what remains of our western culture and heritage, and the land that has produced them.

My mission is to preserve as much as I can, of that which will soon vanish, through my photography.

Great photo & interesting account on all three. How fortunate all three are loved & well taken care of :)

  • Thank you, Nina!

I would have preferred to include a lot less explanation, but some of the groups I wanted to submit to, have requirements.

Scramble is right. Dogs don’t want to get in the way of Spring. Great shot, Arla~Lynn

  • Thanks, Lynn! Spring is the most gentle and patient creature I have ever known. She tolerates the dogs running around beneath and around her — these two just pushed her limits, today. She would not hurt them, but she was not going to put up with any more foolery. They need to know the bounds.
