Farewell, Jose Cuervo by Arla M. Ruggles

Farewell, Jose Cuervo by

Unstaged scene as found in a long-abandoned house.

In my minds eye, I watch the last inhabitants of the old house raise a glass to toast times gone by and the future; gather the last of their personal belongings, and quietly close the door behind them.

About Arla M. Ruggles

Great Basin Life exists on the fringes … between … high desert expanses and majestic mountain wilderness.
Daily, I watch the winds of change sweeping away what remains of our western culture and heritage, and the land that has produced them.

My mission is to preserve as much as I can, of that which will soon vanish, through my photography.

    They toast and close the door. One can only imagine what the days were like there. Did they dance in the evening or did they sit quietly and read? Did they sit worrying about what was lost when the sun went down or did they lay together for love? One wonders what took place in this old house and what the last day was like.

    Very, very nice photograph and commentary. Congrats on the feature. Well deserved.

  • Thanks so much for the comment, and I am delighted that the image has piqued your imagination, as looking at the mysterious vignette did mine, Austin!

    There are so many stories in this old ghost town – I hope to develop some of them for posterity.

    Beautiful, So often I too have stumbled upon places with such settings, today though…it is jail time if anyone is caught so much as photographing the inside. Doesn’t matter even if it is up for tax sale! If only I had been into photography back in the days just ten years ago when you could roam freely the old places. Great capture, and your creative expression.

  • Thank you, Pam;

    Most of these places were looted in the 1970’s — i never even considered going into them, until a few months ago.

    I’m fortunate that my neighbors know and trust me to respect these sites. They understand that I am all about “preservation” through photography … strangers would likely encounter a different reception, if they went poking around inside. ;D
