I don’t know exactly why these “gnomes” of the flower world so fascinate me. Blooms about the size of a quarter on stems up to six inches tall, they hide their freckled faces in a downcast glance. It takes an experienced eye to find them on their dry and partly sunny hillsides – but when you do – gently lift up the little bonnets to reveal a bright surprise inside!
