I don’t know exactly why these “gnomes” of the flower world so fascinate me. Blooms about the size of a quarter on stems up to six inches tall, they hide their freckled faces in a downcast glance. It takes an experienced eye to find them on their dry and partly sunny hillsides – but when you do – gently lift up the little bonnets to reveal a bright surprise inside!

Great Basin Life exists … between … high desert expanses and majestic mountain wilderness.

Daily, I watch the winds of change sweeping away what remains of our western culture and heritage, and the land that has produced them.

My mission is to preserve as much as I can, of that which will soon vanish, through my photography.

The look like a member of the orchid family. Gorgeous capture. :o)

  • Thank you, Bunny! I only first discovered them last year, and had a lot of collaboration in the identification process.
