The Legend Of Spring: Orphan Mustang
She was hard to look at; this emaciated foal with wounds covering most of her lanky body. In some places, the bones of her legs were clearly visible where pieces of her flesh have been torn away…...
Abandoned by her herd – probably because of the severity of her injuries – little Spring (as we have decided to call her) was rescued late yesterday afternoon. (2009.JUN.18)

Susan Bergstrom
Oh I am so glad she has been rescued!!! Looking forward to rest of story!
Arla M. Ruggles replied
Thanks, Susan … it’s easy enough to describe the events of the day … not at all easy to express the feelings—of knowing that we were guided to be in that certain place, at that difinitive moment! We had actually planned to go somewhere else … one hour either way, we might have missed her altogether. Oh! Providence!
Vanessa Anderberg
Looking forward to her story being told…Glad she is rescued
Arla M. Ruggles replied
Thank you, Vanessa!

what a little beauty, it is awesome that she has been saved, we have a horse that was badly mistreated before we got her and she is the loveliest natured mare you could get, she was skin and bone when we got her a few months ago now she is looking so well and beautiful, it is very rewarding to see her living and doing so well and I only hope all the best for this little ones future
Arla M. Ruggles replied
Thanks so much for the encouraging words!
Spring showed little fear of us – so young, she had apparently not yet been instructed on the dangerous nature of humans. From the looks of her injuries, we think she was attacked by a mountain lion …. but that will forever be speculation.
She will have a wonderful home, with a large natrual-terrain enclosure (several acres to run around in), and even a “big sister” of similar heritage to share her horsey childhood with.
Already, she has blessed so many.

A sad picture with a wonderful ending. Who rescued her?...Lynn
Arla M. Ruggles replied
My neighbor and I did the round-up on foot.
Little Spring wasn’t terribly hard to capture; she was too weak to run very far, very fast—and I think animals tend to know when someone is trying to help them. After several efforts to lasso her cowboy style, Ray grabbed her by the tail, and I slipped a soft rope around her neck.
My friend is a great “horse person” – a virtual “whisperer” (as they say since the movie); he already has one rescued orphan.
Had we waited for the BLM to act, little miss would have been coyote fodder.
Lynn Bawden
Nice job to the both of you…Lynn

A truly beautiful foal. So reassuring to know that they are monitored and rescued. Warm wishes, Julie.
Arla M. Ruggles replied
Thank you, Julie …. the foal was rescued by private individuals that just happened to find her.
The “monitoring agency” (Bureau Of Land Management) now proposes removing all of the wild horses from their 1 million+ acre habitat in eastern Nevada. :`(
j442000
So sorry to hear this. It would be wonderful to think petitions were put in place by animal lovers to oppose the horses being moved from their habitat. Warm wishes, Julie.

This is just so sad. Nature can be so cruel at times. I am so happy to hear she has been rescued. Even though she is injured and poor, you captured her beauty.
Arla M. Ruggles
Thanks, Lisa …. you should see her now! Spring has grown strong, healthy, and energetic. You would never guess where she came from. :)
