I AM HEART BROKEN!

I just found out today my beloved wild horse herd was rounded up without my knowledge. I went out last weekend and could not find one horse. I thought that they may have went through the fence at Dugway Proving Grounds and they were on the Army Base. They frequently did this and sometimes you were unable to find them. According to the BLM the horses don’t have enough food or water to sustain themselves. If you have seen my pictures of the horses you can see just how much land these animals have. The Onaqui Herd Management Area (HMA) is located 40 air miles southwest of Salt Lake City. The HMA extends from Johnson’s Pass south to Lookout Pass. Wild horses can be seen on the bench and flat areas along the east and west side of the mountain range. The HMA contains 43,880 acres of Federal, State, and privately owned land. You tell me how can this not be enough land to sustain these horses? They are planning on only putting 30 horses back!!! My question is if the BLM does not have enough money to sustain these horses in the wild how can they have enough money to corral them and feed them for however long it takes to find them a home or EUTHANIZE them? I really did not think this was going to affect me this way but I am very hurt. I will not be going out for a very long time to photograph the horses.

I am so sorry, what a shame to treat these beautiful creatures that way…Hoping someone is able to find a solution and they will be released back into nature where they BELONG..(((HUGS)))

OMG Gene. I am so sorry. I wish they would just leave them alone. Government is what it is. If I could I would give them a home but that would not make them happy. They need to be free. Can you start a petition to stop this?

NOW …. MORE THAN EVER —DON’T STOP PHOTOGRAPHING THE HORSES!! Oh yes! I DO know the heartbreak - they want to remove ALL 620 horses from our TWO MILLION ACRE Ely Wild Horse District …. Keep shooting! Keep posting! Now, more than ever, we need to SHOW the horses in their true environment. Don’t let them convince people that the herds are not sustainable or—as here; that they cause “environmental damage” (suddenly, after 200 years?!!) Contact your Congressmen …

The BLM needs to be put in their place, enough already. TELL THEM TO LEAVE THE HORSES ALONE…LEAVE THEM THERE, NATURE TAKES CARE OF ITSELF, IT DOES NOT NEED US TO KEEP INTERFERING. ANOTHER WAY OF WASTING OUR TAX DOLLARS.

Oh honey, God bless you and your heart. As well as those horses! Through your pictures we have too come to love those horses and they will truly be missed. You and your spirit herd will be in my prayers and my thoughts. Gene keep your faith in those horses as we do through your visions!

    Judy Grant

Gene you do the horses proud with your wonderful work . Anytime man messes with Mother Nature it is a sad affair ! Last summer someone shot some wild horses in Alberta and one mare was pregnant . Too bad they are not respected more . I am sad for you !

  • F.A. Moore

    F.A. Moore

OMGosh, Gene, I know you’re devastated. Oh, dear. And I thought we got rid of terrible BLM management with the last sweep of election. I cannot believe this. Write everyone you know. Get those beautiful pictures in the newspaper, and into journalists hands. Local journalists can have a HUGE impact if they act together in indignation (I have direct experience with that). Aria M. Ruggles is right-on.

I know you must be crying/dying inside; but do so with burning-mad tears. Go get em Gene. Get schools involved! I’m serious. They start hearing parents and getting letters from school children etc. they don’t want the negative feedback there. Get a campaign going.

Hate to use the word euthanize, as I don’t know. But I suspect that’s what’s going to happen. Time is of the essence.

There is a form at the end of that page to write to Obama and your Senators about the wild horse roundup which is in full swing. There are also phone numbers. It’s a place to start for everyone you can muster into your campaign, Gene.

I’ve just submitted the form mentioned above to my Legislators. It was easy and quick. Thanks to F.A.Moore for the link.

Geno, I am so sad about this, mostly for YOUR sake. I know how much you love them. You can certainly be proud and happy for your devotion to them. I almost feel like being physically sick over this. I’m SO glad you took so many wonderful pictures, and, as mentioned above by several people, please don’t stop.

    We love you, Geno.

Don’t give up on these amazing animals Gene, beaurocracy always seems to take precidence over common sense and it isn’t right, you need to keep the common sense of the everyday folk who really know what’s best for these animals up front and centre with these amazing images, don’t let beaurocracy bog down the common sense needed to keep these animals alive on the land they obviously thrive on, keep fighting and keep bubbling.

Oh Gene, this is a disaster. All the suggestions above might help – is there anything we can do here Down Under? We have issues of our own about our wild brumbies which are ‘ruining’ the land, not being indigenous. It’s amazing that conservation decisions (and I have no issue with preservation and conservation, believe me) always seem to be made without ANY consideration of what you might call an amenity value, over and above the strict conservation goals. Even in horsemeat-eating Europe, there is growing repugnance for the merging of the status of the horse into something for the table. I know that in the States there are several movements quite vocal in their opposition to sacrificing the mustangs for the greater good of conservation. Look here. I know this website carries lots of updates on the situation regarding mustangs.
Sorry to add to the long list of advice-givers – before anything else, I share your despair and heart-break at the almost certain fate of your magnificent equine friends – I’ll help if I can.

Oh Gene, I can’t believe it! You have been on my mind, I was just talking about your work and shared the link to your wild horse page yesterday. The time you took sharing your herd with me touched my heart in a profound way. I have completed 19 paintings of them, and feel like I have become close to them during this time. My Equine vet saw them yesterday and said, “Wow they all look fat and healthy”. Since the Pryor Mnt round up I have been writing, and will redouble my efforts. My heart hurts for you my friend!

Hi Gene, I am so sad to hear that has happened. Why do humans always interfere with nature, and then wonder why the earth is getting messed up ? I live in the UK, but a trip to America to see the wild horses is high up on my list of things to do – I would so love to see the mustangs in the wild – they are so beautiful. There are a few petitions going around to save the wild mustangs, as I have signed a few recently. I feel you should do all you can, along with your wonderful photos, to make people aware of what is going on. All the best, Michelle

Yes Gene, through all the hurt you (and us) feel, a strength and wisdom should come out to help those precious animals. THEY NEED YOU, GENE! I’m sure you have the love and the guts to stand up for them. I believe God put you there for a reason and I pray that He will use you to accomplish what needs to be done. Go for it, don’t give up! We are here too if you need any help.

It’s so heartbreaking, what’s happening to these wild herds. I think Arla had a good suggestion, I hope you can bear to keep photographing and showing the horses in their environment. I can understand how this would hurt, they must be so much a part of you. My prayers are with you and them.
