Gene Praag

Need some Critique!!!

I went out for the first time and did some portrait photography! This little one was one week old and what a little sweetheart. She was so alert for being a week old. This is nothing like taking pictures of the wild horses. I really had a good time but I know I need a ton more practice. Please give me some honest feedback and some suggestions! Thanks in advance!

Geno, these are gorgeous photos! I photograph my granddaughters all the time, specially when they were babies, and I love it too. These look very professional with the props and everything.

Hey Gene, The photos are technically beautiful. The thing I love about your horse shots is the raw nature of them. I think the same works for me with baby shots… Take away the props (flowers on the head etc) and these would have been pristine for me. But this is only a commentry on personal choice. There is obviously some connection to those items that worked for yourself or the parents. Some people love baby photos with props, others love them plain (me included!) . Regardless of what I think the shots are delightful. If they are the first portraits of bubbies you have taken… well you are doing wondefully!

The one with the pink flower is my favorite too, excellent pictures and setting, only one little thing…I miss the eye contact :) Use a little red ball or something to get her attention!

First, a question. Do you use a photo-editing program, and which one? Second, I saw this wonderful little video on Good Morning America right here . You have to sit through a commercial first, but the clip is so cute.

I do use a photoshop cs2 and microsoft digital image pro. Loved the video thanks for the link. I have another crack at photographing this little one again next week.

hey, geno! a whole new venue 4 u here! and very well done, too. must agree with khosie about the props, but if that’s what mom wants, that’s what mom gets. am wondering what a different, lighter background would look like for the first image? what do u think? :))

The first image is my favorite because of the way you designed the props, all around her. It’s obvious and cute, although, it might also be nice in a vignette to finish the nostalgic look. For the other two, I could do without the props. I think either props all the way, over the top, almost, or none.

Funny, I was just opening up a journal for critiques when I saw yours. Had to run over here first. Your photography is beautiful. And this baby, as you said, is so wide-eyed at only a week. Sweet.

Oh, those are adorable! The first image is definitely a keeper, although you asked for a critique so, I think the stuff surrounding her could have been moved away from her face – it distracts but overall very cute. Nice job! The second image is also cute but might have been better if you could have or her parents could have gotten her attention to look towards the camera. So cute though. The third image is ok, seems like an awkward position but the black and white still makes it look nice.

    Overall great job, very professional!

    awesome work here !!
props – no props … that’s a matter of personal taste really, so nothing to say on that
the first image is a stunner, though yes, I would agree that the gauzy fabric around her face is a little distracting ‘cause the edge of the material is visually too close to her mouth
the second image is delightful too! – I agree about the eye contact
the third image – yes, the position looks a touch awkward … but beautiful none the less

You’ve certainly delivered stunning work here! Nice !! :)

Gene – I don’t think there is any advice on the technical aspects of baby portraiture – these are just adorable, beautifully done images. I’ll say like visual above however – some of the “stuff” on this baby’s head is not only distracting but in fact, too large – especially in the first image – so that it actually rather overwhelms the face. Scaled back a bit that wouldn’t be so distracting. Otherwise – exceptionally well done Gene.

wow they are wonderful! The only thing I would say about the first one is to have the face clear of the netting. And to try to get “The shot” by getting the baby to look straight at the lens (not always easy but a squeaky toy might work). But apart from that – brilliant! Jane

Geno, I am not familiar with your programs. I use Paint Shop Pro. I usually like to try their “quick fix” first. Then I very often work from there. Like, they give it the headstart, and I fin-tune it to my own taste.

I agree with others that there is too much around the baby in the first one, and I also think that brown is not the best color choice. But, for all I know, that may have been what the Mom wanted. I actually prefer the second image, but I think you could either lighten it up or else reduce the saturation…or both. But I like the softer focus. I’m not much of a fan of black and white for babies. Their skin tone and texture are so perfect, and the lack of color makes them look “hard”, like a doll almost.

Isn’t it tough when you ask for critiques, and then actuall get some?? LOL! I’m going to be anxious to see next week’s results. I hope you’ll post them!

well done on your first baby shots, somethng i have neved done. Just personaly they remind me of baby photos taken by a franchise type photo company we have here in Australia where they use lots of props and some of them really silly. otherwise they are great.

Lucky you … what a beautiful, alert, cooperative week old baby!
There’s not much I can say at this stage other than to repeat that you have done very well, the props in the first I find distracting (as have some others), personally I love the softness of the second and third and there should always be some B&W shots included (personal pref. again). Look forward to seeing next week’s shots, including some, but not all, looking at you.
