Caught In The Storm!

What a difference a day makes. One day you go out to the horses and it’s 60 degrees. The next day you get caught in a fast approaching storm….....!

When I arrived out in the desert, I located the horses right away. They wasn’t far from where they had been the night before. They were walking in a straight line along the horizon. Anticipating where they were heading I parked the truck and started to hike.

I hiked about 3 miles before I finally caught up with them only to find them running for the trees.

Before I knew it the storm had hit. I debated on heading back to the truck but decided to stay and watch a while.

It really started to come down so I climbed underneath a tree to wait it out for a while.

The horses behave pretty much the same as they do when the weather is good.

After the storm had passed the desert was covered with a fresh coat of snow and the horses moved back down out of the trees.

Then the winds picked up and I had a long hike back to the truck. What a day!

Welcome To Spring in Utah!

Great story Gene and I can see you have about the same kind of spring as we do here. You never know when it’s going to hit you. Great shots and so different in this weather but you’re right the horses behave exactly the same.

  • Gene Praag replied

Thanks Teresa. I think I really stayed to see just how the horses did behave. It turned out to be quite a learning experience.

You got some beautiful pictures of horses and snow. You got lucky. Even one foot (maybe more with a truck) of snow and you would have had a problem. I’m glad you had fun.

  • Gene Praag replied

Thanks Lori. If it had continued to snow much longer I would have packed up and headed out sooner.

What an enormous herd! I rarely see more than six or seven in a band, out here.
I hope you had on lots of layers, and - most importantly - your camera did not get wet.

    Yeah. I’m envious ….
and yes—we’ve had the same spring weather. >:[

  • Gene Praag replied

All winter long they herd has been split into small bands. I would find half a dozen here and a dozen there, but yesterday when I went out the whole herd was together. There are still aobut a 100 that are split into smaller bands but I would bet there was about 200 of them all together the last couple of days.

What a sensational series, with such a great story! I love the snow ones in particular.

Horses are weird, aren’t they? I’ve seen them standing out in a hailstorm that would break your windscreen, all they do is turn their bums into the wind … in 40C heat, standing 20 metres away from a huge gumtree which provides a massive shade canopy and reduced temperatures … in the middle of a wet winter, lying down in what was in effect a creek, as the water runs down the paddock … yet if one marchfly comes near them, it’s chaos!

    Who can explain The Horse????
