Breakfast Creek Wharf Brisbane Australia by

Located across the river from two of Brisbane’s most famous landmarks, Newstead House and The Breakfast Creek Hotel, is the Breakfast Creek Wharf. Once a thriving entertainment venue the Breakfast Creek Wharf fell into disrepair iover recent years after falling on hard times.

The site was famous historically for a landing by explorer John Oxley, who dissatisfied with Redcliffe as a settlement location, had chosen to travel further along the river. His party stopped at this location to have breakfast, and met up with a local indigenous tribe. He named the location Breakfast Creek in honour of the occasion, and it was because of this journey that Brisbane was built in its current location.

The Breakfast Creek Wharf was built on this site as part of World Expo 88. It became a popular place to be seen, to eat and shop for some years after.

Gondola rides were a regular attraction along the creek, the gondolas still moored at the wharf today.

A beautifully intricate water clock, world renowned for its design, was once a central feature of the wharf.

In 2011 the site was bought from receivers and although the new developers remain silent as to its future, works are already underway for its redevelopment. It is hoped by many locals that this iconic structure will be restored to its former glory.

I was rewarded with a breathtaking sunset tonight when I ventured to the wharf to explore.

Oh Jo this is wonderful! Wow you certainly headed there on the right afternoon thats for sure. LOVE this.

  • Thanks Beth, wasn’t it the most stunning sunset? I actually started off at Kalinga Park and it wasn’t happening and so Breakfast Creek was kind of a last minute idea. At this point I wasn’t sure if the sunset was going to be fantastic of a fizzer the sky could’ve gone either way. I was SO excited when the sky burst into colour just as I got across to the Wharf. I kept praying that I didn’t botch it up lol.

Amazing work Jo… love the gold and pink tones.

  • Thanks Tracie, the colours are beautiful aren’t they? I really only used post processing to recreate it as I’d seen it. It truly was the most incredible sunset.

Excellent capture and great post processing. The illustrative feel serves to enhance the image…well done…

  • Wow thankyou Laura, what amazing feedback, I’m so flattered. I really just tried to recapture the scene as my own eyes witnessed it, something of course the original capture just cannot do justice. I was just flawed by the scene before me, it was like looking at an incredible painting and I wanted to recreate that.
