Rant: Throw enough mud and some of it will stick

Throw enough mud and some of it will stick. A mantra of sorts that I live by. My art is not for everyone, or even for most people. Sometimes it offends, shocks, upsets, arouses, inspires or invades the senses. I don’t consider that a flaw. I consider that an achievement. And I’ll put it all out there and see what happens. It sounds tacky but if it reaches only one person in a hundred, I’ve succeeded.

I don’t care what the other ninety-nine people think about it. I just don’t. My concentration is fixed squarely on the person who ‘gets it.’ I’m happy to keep making art for that one person if it means I get to create the ideas and images in my head. To do anything else would be to sell myself short. If you are offended. Good.

Jo, you have the saying wrong. It should go “Throw enough art and some of it will stick”. Not everyone “gets’ what art is about. The more exposure people get to different types of art, the bigger the chance that they will have to understand it.

Thing is, looking at the work you’ve got on here, I’d never have characterised it as something produced with a scatter-gun approach, done in the hope that it might get through to someone.

    Far from it.

AMEN…just keep on remembering that. It IS an achievement. Be proud.

Jo…....I am completely perplexed at how your work could offend anyone. It is creative, passionate and often amusing…...................I look forward to every addition to your folio and find the narrative behind the work inspiring and informative.

Really strange to be reading this… I had the feeling that you were one of the most popular bubblers around. I’d have thought that your mud would stain the ninety-nine people rather than the “one”.

Totally agree with this… if you stop making art that is inside of you, you cease to be creative! Art is a single insight into one person’s mind… I’m inspired that you allow people into yours… a great way to live!

The thing about your art is that it pushes the boundaries. Not only of the art form, but of our emotions. Some people just aren`t emotionally ready for it. For some people, everyone should piss champagne and shit chocolate icecream.

I personally am happy that you`ve taken the standpoint you have because that means we`ll be seeing more from you and that the boundaries will be pushed yet further. It`s because of people like you that art is proliferated through the centuries. Otherwise it would die of bordedom. Thank you for the ongoing buzz.

    Jo, never stop being yourself.
I know I’ve said this before but I’ll say it again and again…
It is your dedication and genuine love of art of all forms that inspires not only myself but a whole world of others.
I can guarantee your personality, charisma and art has touched more than just one and will continue to do so, in fact I’m about 25th in line here in the comments which kind of drives home my point.
Stay true mate, we all love ya just the way you are! :D

well, i guess i’ll get hated for this…but, shit…. i like some of your stuff and i too get a little bit bummed out over comments sometimes…but i hardly think it needs TWO posts in a matter of days to say what should be pretty obvious to any artist.

‘yeh, look, i’m building what i like here.’ that’s the only reason, isn’t it?

anyway, all this redbubble generated love-in shit kinda gets away from the art, doesn’t it?

Jo, you put the most important sentence in there.

..... if it means I get to create the ideas and images in my head. To do anything else would be to sell myself short….....

Ultimately, I don’t know of anyone who exhibits, shows, shares .. whatever, anything that they are not pleased to share.

If other people like it, kudos to you – the ones who don’t – don’t.
    It wasn’t done for them.

This is how I like to put it:
I’d rather one person looked at my art and loved it and one person looked at my art and hated it, than 2 people looked at my art and felt nothing at all.

  • Gracey

Well, it’s hard to tell…you’ve got the safe filter on some of it (which I appreciate) but the ones I can see don’t offend me – what they do is make me think about the story behind the image – about what it says. Some of them are rather stark (that’s a good thing in my books), but almost all of it SAYS something, which I think shows a remarkable mind at work in the creation of the final pieces.

There seems to be a lot of this on Redbubble. Yours is the upteenth post i’ve seen in the last few weeks stamping down people who are offended, rude, sending hate mail, making nasty comments etc. Whats the deal?
I’m not one for unabashed praise and back slapping…but it’s a bit bizzare to say the least.
Anyway i really dig you’re work. How people are offended by it i’m not sure…though i’m sure people in general would be offended by a baby kitten cuddling chocolate if it meant they got some attention.

Keep going Jo, bugger the naysayers – I think that most people here respect and admire you and your work enough to support and appreciate the uniqueness of your muse. Most of us here are artists and can appreciate the value of diversity.

Use the criticism as a guage – it means your pushing the right buttons.

You Go Girl. You are 100% correct if someone doesn’t like it screw um.
Art is totally through feelings, and emotion. Some people don’t get it.
Don’t change a thing. But to be honest I highly doubt anyone could change you from what I have seen. I respect that and you seem like an extremely self centered confident person.(In a huge compliment way meaning you can stand alone if you have to, you are very strong)
Which is awesome! Go get um Tiger

I’ve got spare stakes, if you’d like some ;)

Sometimes, ‘one’ (ie me) wishes certain people weren’t around. And if they have to exist, please not on my planet. How do we resolve this?

I can understand how wars begin. But I don’t want to live in war. I live, as much as possible, in peace and harmony.

The rest of time, (some, some_times) that churning anger interferes and makes doing what you do in fun and enjoyment. I _have found there are ways to get over it…who wants to be angry. No one wants to be a doormat. No one wants to be angry either. Just write ‘em off.

Hi Jo. I believe that the most important thing in art and in life is that we create what we believe is pure. If you believe in what you do then I believe you should keep putting it out there. As you say if even one person gets it and is empowered then this is great.

Just keep on creating JO. I don’t think we are ever really understood. It’s all a part of creating. The yearning to be understood by sharing a little piece of yourself. You share it, you have to be prepared for the good, bad and ugly that comes with opening up. I know you do not want to care about what others think, but we do. I do. It’s hard not too. Next day comes, you move on, and remind yourself it’s good for you. The release of creativity. Food for the soul. I hope that people that are offended by your work are not telling you so. If they do not like it then they can turn it off. Simple as that. They have that function and they have that right. So tell them where they can go and stick it, and you keep keeping on. Enough said. Don’t forget to have fun. All the pics i see of you are ones with a smile, so i gather you are.

Art is meant to move the observer, and if it doesn’t, it isn’t art. Keep on at what you are doing, Jo. You have a beautiful talent and an excellent personality. I love everything you do :-) ~S
