Business Photography
Before I took photos, I managed small businesses. Typically dry cleaners or art galleries (which have more in common than you could imagine). Sometimes I see astounding photographers and visual artists who should be living off their craft but can’t seem to get through the door.
I’m no expert on the topic of marketing, or business or finance, but I do know that burying me head in the sand instead of facing these areas is not going to help. And if I have to face it I might as well educate myself. Of course ‘educating myself’ doesn’t mean I need a degree in communications, but it does mean I need to think about the experiences I have buying art, what makes them good or bad, and decide to improve from what I notice. And it means that I need to keep my eyes open to the advice and information available all around me.

I’m trying to fumble my way through all that now… the hardest thing I find, is trying to educate my “clients” on exactly what I am worth. It’s not easy, but at the end of the day, I need to confront it, or I’m going to spend a lot of time doing freebie crap, and never attaching a value to what my time and effort is worth

Thanks Jo I will read through it all after I have had a few coffees

Much more direct than a communications degree. Don’t be fooled, they don’t teach this stuff at uni. It’s all strategic planning and crisis management. Thanks for the info!

This is brilliant Jo – you are a wonderful soul :)) I’m sure a lot of people are going to benefit from your thoughts and research to date. I wish you well on your pursuit – I think self education is one of the better ways, to truly absorb and learn. XO

I’ve always said, you need to be a good businessman to be successful as a pro photographer, not so much a good photographer. Some of us are neither and will never make a living out of it. ;)

Hang on. Five minutes ago you’re telling us that making a living from our art isn’t our prime objective – “give it away! ” you say.
Now you are suggesting we sell our soul/sole on the Internet.
:)

Thank you for this. I am not a professional photographer but I have an interest in it and this will help me to learn more about it so I am grateful. Also I just have to say I think one of my favorite things to do is read all the comments people leave I can spend hours just reading those.

“Sometimes I see astounding photographers and visual artists who should be living off their craft but can’t seem to get through the door.” Maybe because they refuse to compromise? Maybe because their artistic integrity is worth more than a few sales?

thanks Jo – good resources are always valuable in our industry

thanks Jo, very good information to refer too – I believe I have a market but am the one with my head in the sand, not knowing how to approach the field of marketing, these resources seem to be a start in the right direction.
