Fontana di Trevi

Fontana di Trevi

When traveling, I became really disenchanted with photography. So many photographers all taking the same shots from the same spots. Why even bother trying to come up with something different?

By the time we got to Rome, I had started leaving my “good” camera at home, instead taking the point and shoot, which also happens to be an underwater camera. This pretty much saved me from a total creative burn out. There was something about dunking it in the fountains, and taking it out while it was pissing down rain that made me feel free to enjoy the experience. Okay, and I had a smug little moment watching the tourists rush to shelter their SLRs from the weather while I happily plonked my camera into a puddle. hehehe

This shot is from our trip to the Trevi Fountain. I thought about straightening it up, but decided I like it crooked. Besides, lots of Italy is a bit crooked (architecturally)

Around 3,000 euros are thrown into this fountain each day. That’s a lot of coins!

gorgeous shot..I know there are a trillion shots of the ol’ trevi but how beautiful was it when you found it and saw it?

  • Jo O'Briencommunity ambassador replied

In Rome, all the good stuff seemed to be squashed down the end of narrow streets. Quite surreal when you realise the grandeur of what’s at the end.

  • Jo O'Briencommunity ambassador replied

I might as well have jumped in – it was splashing all over the place. I walked away wet all up my arms and in my lap! lol

I think it is wonderful Jo….and I’m now jealous, I want an underwater camera!

  • Jo O'Briencommunity ambassador replied

prior to having an underwater camera, I had some Tupperware, heavy duty tape and a remote control for my SLR which worked through the clear plastic…. and no fear! lol

i love this perspective its so different for a change!!! all my shots of Trevi are so convetional, this is so creative, a different take on Italy… Lovely! i love the difference between the top and bottom of the shot, its great! :)

  • Jo O'Briencommunity ambassador replied

Thanks Fiona. I took a bunch of conventional shots too, but it was nice being able to dive right in and have some fun with it.

  • Soxy Fleming

maybe I should just try….old standard SLR converted to pinhole sealed in Tupperware quickly after have self timer activated….(could it work? you’d have to be quick!)

  • Jo O'Briencommunity ambassador replied

It took me far longer than a ten second timer to tape that baby up. How trustworthy is your Tupperware? You would really really really want to do some tests for depth and air tightness. maybe fill your container with tissues for a trial run?

  • Soxy Fleming

    Soxy Fleming

yes I’ll be careful! But thank you for the inspiration. I have a firend who has made a sound proof housing (out of…tupperware) for his digital camera so he can take close up pictures of classical acoustic performances. Looks ridiculous, like a large toy camera, but it works!

Beautiful Jo, and I agree on the perspective of this shot being very Italian in feel.

I wonder if any of those tourists thought you were grabbing those Euros when you dunked your hands into the puddle ;)

I have some really standard and boring shots of the Trevi and have seen countless more. This is absolutely the best picture I’ve ever seen of it, simply brilliant and you’re right about the crookedness too. Perfect!
