empty woman
causes of female infertility include:
stress
diet
excessive exercise
athletic training
poor nutrition
Food was just fuel to keep on living. I neither enjoyed it, nor cared if I ran out of money on Thursday and didn’t eat again until Monday when I got paid. When my periods stopped, I was relieved that I would now be saving $4.95 a month on tampons.

demon

Alf Caruana

Robert Knapman
This is bleak but also utterly extraordinary. Congratulations Jo. Its all there for those that want to see.

Paul Vanzella
...am I allowed to favourite this like 100 times…!!!!!!!!! Oh Lordy Jo – this is spectacular… I heard abou this image and now seeing it live is just incredible… your tonal work, concept and art direction are exemplary – Outstanding piece of work!
jtaft
This is so powerful, I’m lost for words!
Julie Langford
This is exceptional work Jo. It is disturbingly real looking and thought provoking, with a powerful message. The woman looks completely empty and spent and your title is just perfect for this piece. It just hits like a bulldozer on a mission!
Daniel Rayfield
Oh my when bleak turns worse
TextureoftheSin
Such a haunting image! Well done, Jo – so good to see such a powerful statement.
Basia McAuley
Brilliant work Jo.
Jane Keats
Woah, that is spectacularly freaky, great image!!
beanarts
Terrific work. It says so much, has so much depth and is disturbing yet alluring.
Anyone who thinks this is disturbing and a “disgusting” sense obviously has no clue about makeup and the effects simple makeup has at making shadow.
Beautiful art.
Lauren Marr
OH wow!
gigglemonster
Beautiful photo! Such a haunting image, it really is a great story telling photo :)
Eden Sandwell
extremely powerful, confronting and thought provoking, excellent :-)

David Symons
Good art, sooooo good
Craig Shadbolt
Wow. Very Marilyn Manson-esque! Spooky. Well done for provoking a range of comments too.
barnsis
What a strong image, great lighting effects. Well done.
earthairfire
Love it, or hate it, it’s certainly provoked a reaction! Some will describe it as social pornography, but then again they’ll also say that to news photographers in a war zone. Personally, I think it’s a disturbingly beautiful and evocative image.
Tim
PS – don’t hate me for mentioning it, but your horizon’s wonky… :)

Hells teeth, this is bleak

Jessica Tremp
the use of the empty pool as an underlying metaphor is very clever…
Outdoors2
Quite an impressive work.
As the saying goes: “The weight of the world” This seems to reflect her whole universe, with every aspect of dreary. Hopefully The Sun will come out tomorrow and as we all go through hardship and dismay….this too will pass.
Yuri Lev
This is stark, uncomfortable, which often makes for great art.
Antanas
Great capture
Dillon Langlands
not all suicide notes are written in ink, some are carved in bone
Danielle Kay
amazingly powerful
Tracy Wallace
I agree with yurilev and Dillon.
What lens was used for this shot Jo?
Kathryn Potempski
empty lost and forlorn,brilliant Jo.
Marion Chapman
i love how she looks like she is going to slowly fall backwards into the half empty pool.
marvellous image
kvalle
scary…. and I cant believe how cold she would have been in teh 8degree day with only bones to keep her warm…. amayzing shot Jo you really captured this horrible sickness….
Geoff Coleman...
The sense of desolation and sheer aloneness you’ve rendered here is exceptionally powerful Jo – that derelict pool is inspired and the faux memoirs add so much to it. A risky shot that manages to circumvent the “freak-show” aspect I’ve seen in the way other anorexic images are presented.
Holly Werner
Haunting and moving Jo.
Faizan Qureshi
What a stunning piece of work Jo. You’ve delivered the message so well. I’m so proud of you! :)
Lindsay Blamey
Stunning, Inspiring, emotive, thought provoking, compelling.
This is the work of an exceptional artist. I’m really taken back by the overall quality of this… from concept to technique. Congrats on the outstanding work.
MissKristy
Jo…the image alone is, of course, disturbing. My immediate response was repulsion and horror..along with some of my own personal demons and memories. I found I couldn’t look at it for long but was drawn back to it. Like those ads on TV warning of the dangers of smoking, drinking, drink driving, etc – they are troubling and they stay in our minds – for a good reason. This is extremely evocative and if there were no substance behind it, if it was here just for shock purposes and no real message behind it..I doubt I’d like it. It is certainly not fun to look at. But there if a reason for that and there is a message here. I love that you have posted the facts on the causes of female infertility here….and that you added an excerpt from ‘fake memoirs’ to accompany this – it makes this all the more powerful.
I still don’t know if I love or hate this. But I had to come back to it. And it shook me up and reminded me of some harsh reality. And that’s the whole point isn’t it.
Kimothy
this is brilliant
Nicole Goggins
such a compelling image. your processing here is perfect for this image – so desolate and depressing…
Paul Louis Vil...
Confronting.
Your art direction, execution and production is wonderfully ominous! :)
khelltic
this is so amazing! i saw you doing the bit of make up on her before the shoot and now seeing the results…..wow…well done!
ltruskett
Hard to look at….....no one likes to see pain in another…........... however, the message is certainly strong…..... just very, very personally…....I would have liked her to have her top on…......just more impact for me…....but that is just me.
jemimalovesbigted
not much to add to the long and expressive list above, except congrats on even tackling this with an amazing outcome! wonderful!

oooh. hits the mark well. eerie. intriguing.
‘awful’ but good.
Darren Burdell
This is a stand-out image for sure, so strong in every sense. Along with your text this delivers such impact, absolutely amazing work Jo!
Ash Sivils
To get the response that “demon” sent out means you have succeeded. It is in fact art and I disagree with him/her 100%.
Great message to back up a wonderful image, bravo!
Kareness
I saw the ‘behind the scenes’ pic of you shooting before the proper photograph and am amazed.
To me it’s like turning around and finding her standing there like a ghost.
John Robb
Good work Jo.
pictorials :)
wow, this is a great idea
i was hooked from the first paragraph
i don’t like the pic because
it saddens me. it makes me feel uncomfortable

A bleak perception of modern day troubles..
I’ve seen anarexia from very close in my family and seen the horror of it.
Thanks God my niece recovered.. a miracle..
But I still remember the dispair, the feeling of powerless against it..
Great shot and thanks for bringing to attention…
Ash rebeltherace
I truly doubt i can give this any comment
that will mean anything to you
as so many people have already applauded your work
but its a haunting image, one that has given me a slightly different perception of my own apparent ED
well done

Both deeply moving, and deeply disturbing.
In other words….perfect.
Danielle Emerick
amazing!
TFFDavid
She needs a few rice puddings inside her.
Anne Staub
This is a strange image, at first I though Jo needs a holiday! :)) seriously now, the combination of the woman posture, body and facial expression combined with the half empty dirty swimming pool makes it disturbing but surreal. She looks more to me “coming back from the dead”, so empty soul and haunting. Excellent composition and effects.
zoeart08
wow wonderful shot and very…very strong
Eugene Farrell
This is more than moving, you nailed this one on the head, big congrats to yuu and a BIG hats off you.
Anthony Jalandoni
To a medical photographer, there is nothing empty about this woman. She is a warm, determined, strong willed person. As an artist, this is a masterpiece! Great work Jo!
Shona Baxter
This is disturbing but so beautifully shot. The model’s eyes pierce through drawing the audience into the photograph – you can see her inner beauty and her external struggle. I love it.
SkyFoxFPP
Wow. Left without words. Much respect for this amount of courage my sister.
Magda Vacariu
powerful image.
Gideon
Oh wow. There is a place in your head which you cross where photography ends and art is born. This is art. Thought provoking, evocative, provocative… these words do not describe what this does.
Jared D White
wow.
MuscularTeeth
really great job here. the makeup is fantastic..
she looks zombieish and so fatigued from no food..
Grandia
Pretty scary image, yet very admirable that you pay attention to this. Girls need to know that there’s nothing wrong with having a bit of jelly on the belly. ;)
canyouseeit
somewhat spooky, it does freak me out a bit,
but it is an amazing piece. well done
gnolan
great composition and tonality… evocative of many sci-fi/horror moments of confrontation. nice work.

spectacular mood, impressive expression
a real expressionist work !
howardoid
This is one of the most saddest pictures I’ve ever seen. I don’t know which is more tragic; the girl or the state of her surroundings. Both her and the pool look SO neglected and forlorn…..
I hope that’s what you were going for coz that’s what you’ve got.
RoddyM
eeek :0 OMG
Lou Green
uncomfortable -confronting-powerful-haunting-dramatic-you achieve what you set out to do here jo.. . and more – it is art (in my eyes) because it provokes reaction and touches people in so many ways….it is so well conceived, planned and executed
Jessica Walker
I’m not really sure why you got so many mixed emotions on this shot.
I think it’s really powerful. But it doesn’t upset me or anger me. Quite the contrary, it draws me in.
It’s powerful and I think that’s because it makes people uneasy. So, naturally they don’t know what to think of it. Fantastic capture regardless!
Kate Lillian
.. wow.. I can see with how many comments you already have that this piece has a very powerful impact on people. This is one amazing image. the colour tones, the simplicity and elegance. the concept of shooting in the pool, how clever. works just brilliantly. wow.
HanLoosschilder
I’m speechless, this is unbelievably incredible.
Wow.
Glen Allen
extreamly powerful image
Stephen Maxwell
I’ve mixed feelings about this – but I suppose that is part of the point of the image. There is a sort of emptyness about the image and the excerpt from ‘fake memories’, but on the other hand the image is an entire construct from the model to the selective colouring which makes me think that anyone can be as bleak as they want – when they put their mind to it!
Paul Scarsella
very strong image and message!
MOC2
very powerful.
Angel Warda
strong image and wondeful message!
purelife
sorry…........i do not like that kind of work…..................:-(
thank u…...............!as it is more sexy than be a “empty”pic

Jeremy Ham
quite a gripping image.
Sascha Cameron
creepy,.scary, but oh so beautiful. outstanding shot
pAgEdOwN
Excellent art. Your clever use of the near empty pool to contrast with the ‘empty woman’ is a coup.
billyboy
I haven`t been to your pf in a while, which I`m regretting more with each pic I see.
This is just so totally hard rock.
Phil Threlfall
She just needs a couple of steaks, a couple beers, ditch the underduds, and get a shower.
Bit of makeup….. she’d be one sweet woman.
Dave Hare
Very stylish shot, super atmosphere!!
Fabulous model, great contact with the camera.
Paolo De Vince...

you seem at ease in any genre.. it amazes me, you can do one shoot in a style , then turn over compellingly and out pop a piece as incredible as this one…every shoot having meaning and perfection.i have always loved your washer and dryer shots and your work with pv. but on you own..you stun with amazing pieces that alone with not title have so much meaning and depth to them . its striking! then you adding your words to them..still not able to get the photo out of your head while i read.jo you are wonderfully talented.and i can only hope some day to get to this point, as an artist. i get so wrapped up, in making every model look their best, so they are at ease and feel confident, i loose sight of my goals..even “the price” and the “madonna” if the element of vanity and beauty, were not in play, the statement i was trying to convey would have been better stated. seeing your pic here shouts out that fact to me, and i thank you.i try to go over every detail in my work..but the element of reality, is clearly missing from my work.thank you jo. you are so talented and inspiring!—chappel
majo
very deep-impact work
the female infertility note is closer to home than most people think.

BRILLIANT, STRONG, POWERFUL message and work!! Trully outstanding!
NoMessMan
This is very thought provoking. For me it’s a portrayal of the way many people see themselves and their plight these days. For what it’s worth I like it.
Sylvie Bendel

it just hits me.

when i think of the quote “a picture speaks a thousand words” this picture says it all !!
fabulous work and excellent title
Jeff Clark
Powerful, powerful stuff. Perfectly illustrates the excerpt and the title may be as brilliant as the composition. Stellar work!
Connor Murphy
very cold and empty, kind of haunting, very interesting but i like it
hsien-ku
very strong image – haunting and disturbing but also beautiful. There is some strength in this woman and life too. A wonderful work of art.
Robert Armstrong
Very powerful and bleak image as to ones outlook on life! Excellent work all the same!
Anni Morris
This is a scary and powerful image that isn’t easy to look at…without thinking about the pain that must be inside. Rarely do you see a woman ‘exposed’ like this. A honest, disturbing insight into the hell that some experience.
Elle66
What great talent you have. BRilliant work. This one is rather unnerving.
Marco Recuero
muy impresionante

Interesting shot – not really my style but well composed

I think this is art not sick
Thomas Sielaff
Sick…not art.
Julie Marks
Fantastic image of a serious psychiatric disorder to alert others who
are suffering from the same affliction as “the empty woman.”
I would love you to join our group to post this. Several of our
members suffer from eating disorders. This is a courageous
and honest image that is profound and confronts those
who suffer on a visceral level. Fantastic work!!
Fiona Christensen
this is such a powerfully beautiful yet sad shot. so poignant and true…
Susanne Correa
Scary and cold but yet very powerful, I can totally relate after 3 misscarriages and not having any children that is how I felt.
Xcape
It’s powerful though not eye pleasing.
Valdemar
Dear Jo, I view your work and feel impressed. I do not agree that this is sick as some have said. Art is many things to many people. Just as a beautiful poem to one is a jumble of words to another does not stop that jumble from being a poem if one interprets it within the confines of ones own experiences. I do not have the experiences to interpret this work as I think you would wish it interpreted however your words point me in the right direction and I feel haunted by it. Art to me is art when it afects ones feelings. I am affected by your work and therefore consider you an artist.
