empty woman

Jo O'Brien

empty woman

causes of female infertility include:
stress
diet
excessive exercise
athletic training
poor nutrition

Food was just fuel to keep on living. I neither enjoyed it, nor cared if I ran out of money on Thursday and didn’t eat again until Monday when I got paid. When my periods stopped, I was relieved that I would now be saving $4.95 a month on tampons.

Love it, or hate it, it’s certainly provoked a reaction! Some will describe it as social pornography, but then again they’ll also say that to news photographers in a war zone. Personally, I think it’s a disturbingly beautiful and evocative image.

The sense of desolation and sheer aloneness you’ve rendered here is exceptionally powerful Jo – that derelict pool is inspired and the faux memoirs add so much to it. A risky shot that manages to circumvent the “freak-show” aspect I’ve seen in the way other anorexic images are presented.

  • MissKristy

Jo…the image alone is, of course, disturbing. My immediate response was repulsion and horror..along with some of my own personal demons and memories. I found I couldn’t look at it for long but was drawn back to it. Like those ads on TV warning of the dangers of smoking, drinking, drink driving, etc – they are troubling and they stay in our minds – for a good reason. This is extremely evocative and if there were no substance behind it, if it was here just for shock purposes and no real message behind it..I doubt I’d like it. It is certainly not fun to look at. But there if a reason for that and there is a message here. I love that you have posted the facts on the causes of female infertility here….and that you added an excerpt from ‘fake memoirs’ to accompany this – it makes this all the more powerful.

I still don’t know if I love or hate this. But I had to come back to it. And it shook me up and reminded me of some harsh reality. And that’s the whole point isn’t it.

This is a strange image, at first I though Jo needs a holiday! :)) seriously now, the combination of the woman posture, body and facial expression combined with the half empty dirty swimming pool makes it disturbing but surreal. I’m not really sure why you got so many mixed emotions on this shot.
I think it’s really powerful. But it doesn’t upset me or anger me. Quite the contrary, it draws me in.
It’s powerful and I think that’s because it makes people uneasy. So, naturally they don’t know what to think of it. Fantastic capture regardless!

I’ve mixed feelings about this – but I suppose that is part of the point of the image. There is a sort of emptyness about the image and the excerpt from ‘fake memories’, but on the other hand the image is an entire construct from the model to the selective colouring which makes me think that anyone can be as bleak as they want – when they put their mind to it!

you seem at ease in any genre.. it amazes me, you can do one shoot in a style , then turn over compellingly and out pop a piece as incredible as this one…every shoot having meaning and perfection.i have always loved your washer and dryer shots and your work with pv. but on you own..you stun with amazing pieces that alone with not title have so much meaning and depth to them . its striking! then you adding your words to them..still not able to get the photo out of your head while i read.jo you are wonderfully talented.and i can only hope some day to get to this point, as an artist. i get so wrapped up, in making every model look their best, so they are at ease and feel confident, i loose sight of my goals..even “the price” and the “madonna” if the element of vanity and beauty, were not in play, the statement i was trying to convey would have been better stated. seeing your pic here shouts out that fact to me, and i thank you.i try to go over every detail in my work..but the element of reality, is clearly missing from my work.thank you jo. you are so talented and inspiring!—chappel

Dear Jo, I view your work and feel impressed. I do not agree that this is sick as some have said. Art is many things to many people. Just as a beautiful poem to one is a jumble of words to another does not stop that jumble from being a poem if one interprets it within the confines of ones own experiences. I do not have the experiences to interpret this work as I think you would wish it interpreted however your words point me in the right direction and I feel haunted by it. Art to me is art when it afects ones feelings. I am affected by your work and therefore consider you an artist.
