This is one of the ancient trees at Butchart Garden, that represent some of the most primitive living conifers in the world today. This tree is well represented by fossils which date as far back as the early cretaceous period some 200,000,000 years ago.
The most recent discovered tree of the group is the Wollemi pine which was found growing in a gorge northwest of Sydney, Australia in 1994.
