On Jan. 25, 1759, in Alloway, South Ayreshire, was born a child who would one day become known as ‘Scotland’s favourite son,’ the ‘Ploughman Poet’ and, of course, ‘Rabbie Burns.’
And 253 years later, the world still celebrates the life and work of Robert Burns on Jan. 25. A pioneer of the Romantic movement, this poet and lyricist is noted for many of the great literary works, including A Red, Red Rose, Ae Fond Kiss, and the most famous of New Year’s carols, Auld Lang Syne.
But Robbie Burns Night is more than just a celebration of a famous Scot’s birthday. It’s a celebration of Scottish culture and heritage manifested through the famous writer who died at the ripe age of 37.
As part of the traditional celebration, a quintessential Scottish dish is typically served, which is comprised of organ meat, spices and oatmeal stuffed inside a sheep’s stomach — Haggis.
“That’s the big thing. We pipe in the haggis,” said McFergus Scottish Country Dancers president Lil Ferguson. Her organization, along with local Celtic band Desperate for Haggis, is presenting a Robbie Burns Night at Timothy Eaton Gardens on Friday (two days after the actual birthday). ref:
